Full disclosure

I played during vanilla back in 2004-2005 and played every expansion since then( Some more than others). I am hyped for vanilla and can’t wait to play it…However I am in the middle of an existential crisis. I started playing on a private sever for that nostalgia feel while i wait for classic to come out and I gotta say…I’m bored! My question for you fellow players is this:
If i’m not having fun on a private sever, will it be the same on retail? I realize this is a private server and not classic, but should I be worried that it will be the same? My most fond memories from classic are world pvp, long AV battles and ZG ( thats where my raiding ended, i was WAY more into pvp back then). I haven’t gotten a chance to do much of that yet on this private server due to the fact that I can’t get over how boring leveling is. HELP!!

I rolled a mage on a private server and am lvl 55 now. Can’t say I agree with leveling being boring. I don’t know what level you are but I can say that leveling gets better the higher you get. Also try getting into something harder than ZG. Also try doing some pvp you said you used to do. You haven’t scratched much past the surface yet.

I’ve already met a bunch of people and have regulars that I group with. The community aspect is already happening, I’m having a great time and not even 60 yet.

Probably…

I got a war till lvl 14 and stopped playing on the PS just for the sole reason that is not the Original game plus I dont want to make a lot of progress just to think one day it will be deleted

From what I’ve heard Private Servers don’t have active communities unless you’re a hardcore PVPer or Raider. But I haven’t been there, so I can’t confirm that myself.

What happens when you’re in Ironforge?

Slog it out.

I started on a pserver a few months ago for the same reasons as you but I’m having quite the opposite experience. I love leveling in Vanilla. I have 1 of every Class now. 29 Twink Mage. 2 40’s a Warrior and Pally. 2 52s a Rogue and Hunter my druid is 45 I think and the other 3 are in their 30s.

If you’re not on the launch rush of pservers then you will virtually never experience low level PvP in BGs past the 20-29 bracket if your lucky.

If I have to be honest though it sounds like you’d enjoy endgame more but if you can’t even see yourself getting to 60…than idk.

Try rerolling or respeccing?

Take a break from the game till classic comes out so you don’t burn yourself out on leveling. Trust me

sounds like you should stick to retail

I despise what retail has become with a passion.

I swear where in the world are you getting your information from. You have no experience you have no knowledge of private servers, but you continue to talk about them. I’m all for the concept of not having to have actual experience as long as you educate yourself.

Most popular private servers were fine before classic was announced. Most of the population has died down, and now is really just used as a way to integrate yourself into classic.

Private servers aren’t completely accurate so what you experience there may be different than in Classic.

That said, if there is one thing about private servers that IS accurate, it’s probably the leveling experience.

Sad to say, but if you’re bored out of your mind leveling on a private server, you’ll probably experience the same boredom in Classic.

I was thinking the same thing.

Leveling is trash, and it’s always been trash. The only time when leveling is reasonable fun is when you’re doing group content. This game really was made for max level a majority of all the actually enjoyable content is at max level.

Sure there are some people who love leveling as the experience, but most people don’t. Either you have to devote yourself to the grind or not, but don’t expect it to be “fun”.

Something else.

Like I said above low level bgs on pservers are non existent but if the trouble is leveling I could see you having a less boring time if you…maybe wait for phase 3 when BGs are out.

I don’t plan to really start leveling my alts until then because it’s a different experience to rank up and get rep rewards from the BGs as you go.

Do you remember how you felt about leveling in vanilla? Was it mostly something you did with a goal of reaching max level?

Human memories seems to be really good at highlights and lowlights - remembering the best and worst - and not so great at the in-betweens. Is it possible you were bored at various points back then, but pushing through had rewards that you remember more than the boredom?

Another possibility is you may not have been as bored in vanilla as you feel now more for reasons of novelty. If that’s the case, you might actually be one of the few who legitimately is nostalgic but will find the game doesn’t deliver the cocktail they’re looking for.

Because it’s so fun getting smashed by smurfs…in pvp level brackets.

Just in case you don’t remember you couldn’t level in pvp till god what was it Wrath?

I enjoyed it, quite a bit. Granted it was a new game back then and I was coming from warcraft 3, already being a huge fan of the franchise and well versed in the lore.Perhaps I need to pick a different class. I think one of the main issues i’m having is that everywhere I go, everyone out-levels me, there’s no world pvp because there are like 10 people my level and the world feels…empty. Maybe I am playing on the wrong sever but im so far behind everyone else that for meme progression wise I feel almost out of place…the sever doesn’t feel fresh. I have hopes that this is due solely to the fact that this is a private sever that’s well into naxx already.

No I remember and was aware of that when I said what I did.

If my memory serves me right the rep rewards went by level and reputation. So WSG 10-19 was friendly but the 20-29 was honored and so on. I would get to the higher end of the brackets and then spend my time in BGs to get the next rewards than rinse and repeat on my way up

Sounds like you’re running into issues of a older server. I came into vanilla pretty late so that was mostly my vanilla experience. As in outdated content that no one ever wanted to run besides the random alts in org after spaming LFM for 1-2 hours.

Depends on why you bored. What part of the game do you enjoy the most?

I expect Classic will have more people willing to invest in community knowing it will be around a while. Also, the fact that all the players are PAYING customers should also make a big difference. There will probably be a LOT more people for whom vanilla is all new.

I do believe private servers generally feel a lot like vanilla (except for pet classes).
