Chances are if you’ve played since wrath you know about the asset
It’s a proper sword, gray, but fully modeled and you can view it on your player by Ctrl+clicking it. It’s actually an impressive model resolution especially for when it was made. There’s the frost effect by the handle too, animated and everything.
So i was just thinkin’… what if… with Arthas’s story coming back around, they finally flipped the switch on the asset? Unlike some other unobtainables like
which USED to be linkable + previewable but has degraded with patches, frostmourne is still both linkable and previewable. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself- martin fury, crafty’s pole, etc, all kinda decay with the updates and are never updated, yet Frostmourne has stayed in the registry as both a hand-modeled weapon that any player model can preview AND is still linkable.
I’m actually pretty sure they changed it’s quality WELL AFTER WRATH too, correct me if I’m wrong but post-wrath pre-Legion wasn’t frostmourne heirloom rarity (which was then the yellow/beige we now have for artifacts and not the bright blizzard blue post-legion)?
So the fact that they changed it as recently as Legion, which they may have had plans for Shadowlands then, I want to say two expansions forward was a quote I heard about writing stories. Am I grasping at straws or do you think it’s possible this specific item has been maintained so that it can possibly be both obtainable and transmoggable in late shadowlands when Arthas’s story comes back (as it is seeming to with Uther + Anduin being LK-ifyed)?
The only issue would be the current flavor text, explaining that on equip the user becomes the next lich king. That would make for a very odd expansion. But suppose we got rid of the idea of a lich king at all somehow at the end of SL. Maybe then we can finally be wielders of frostmourne. Aren’t we officially attuned to the maw anyway, in a way that the rest of lore characters arent?
How would we get around Frostmourne being shattered in the lore and the pieces being carried by Frost Death Knight PCs? Otherwise, I really like this idea and hope to see it implemented.
Easy- reforge it in the story, if you’re a death knight you use your own, if you’re any other class you borrow it from bolvar or something (it’s not like Frost DKs still use their artifacts in the present timeline). Hell, we have the runecarver already and he’s the one who made Frostmourne to begin with and he’s been crafting us legendary equipment. Why couldn’t we give him some soul ash to fix frostmourne?
And if we do end up fighting arthas again, maybe using his own sword against him would be key to his final shot at redemption.
keyword: devs at the time. It’s interesting that the current devs have kept it maintained by updating its rarity and keeping it linkable through back-end updates that have knocked off a lot of other unobtainables being linkable. It’s almost like the new devs have a plan for it.
Also, oddly, they updated the vendor sale price of it in Shadowlands. In wrath it sold for 64g81s26c. Then they updated it in cata to 58g74s64c. And now, in shadowlands, it’s only 8 copper.
That already happened. Dks used the shards of frostmourne to reforge it into a new weapon.
At this point you’d just be making a copycat runeblade. A frostmourne II if you will.
I doubt we will be seeing it made into a player weapon. At least not in any story capacity. Could be an achievement/challenge drop from a timewalking ICC like the glaives I guess.
I don’t really think it’ll return. Storywise it doesn’t exist anymore. The reforged twin blades are essentially scrap metal now, their power drained and broken after Legion. That was the last remnant of Frostmourne so they’d have to build a brand new one.
But Frostmourne is also too iconic of a weapon to just drop in player hands I think. And you might say Illidan’s glaives were too or the Ashbringer, but that was a hero’s weapon. Frostmourne is a villain’s and the most reviled blade to ever be dropped on Azeroth. No story reason would get someone to remake a mourneblade and have everyone else be ok with that. It’s just be odd giving that to us and seeing a hundred people roaming around with the Lich King’s sword.
Frostmourne is too Iconic to ever be moggable. Even when modeling Arthas, they made his armor part of the character itself and not separate pieces. Last thing we need to see is a million DKs running around with the Helm of Domination and Frostmourne.
The blade we saw the Jailor forge in the cinematics was specifically referred to as a “mournblade,” and it was certainly given an elevated reaction all around. That it could be sense that it was being created, and that it was even worth a reaction and mention from Bolvar suggests that is far more than “just a regular rune blade.” Frostmourne was also called the “finest mourneblade” created by the Runecarver, implying importance on multiple levels. Both of these examples would appear to be quite special in the lore.
That is a good idea. iirc it’s supposed to be Runecarver’s best work, so I wonder how much Soul Ash reforging Frostmourne would take (probably a month of grinding every Torghast wing O_O )
Once we completely free the Runecarver, he’s going to open up a little stall and sell novelty items as “Souvenirs for your visit to the Maw”. One of these will be a replica Frostmourne sword. You’ll also be able to get a bobble head Zorvaal!
