They certainly can be. I have a katana set that could do some serious damage if an intruder decides to burst in. But a lot of swords are merely decorative nowadays.

Uhhh, zinc copper alloy equals brass. The blade is probably 440a stainless steel (or a Chinese equivalent), the fittings and guard brass with a chrome plating. There can be a small percentage of tin in brass along with other trace elements.

Meaning cheap, like I said earlier in the thread. The metal likely comes from China. IMHO the blade is likely just coated in stainless for the effect.
