This is my main. I really enjoy tanking as blood. However, I have little experience with Frost and Unholy but would like to start playing around with one. So far, Unholy seems a little less straightforward than Frost but that may be my lack of experience.
J plan to stay blood for the most part. However, any recommendations on which off spec I should devote a bit of time to?
Honestly, try both, see what you like. While you learn, you can use some tools like Conro to help with the rotation and see what you like the best. Personally, I find frost more appealing, but i like dual wielding any time I can.

I’m a frost/blood player. Love both specs. Never really liked UH because it’s a pet class, which isn’t my jam. Frost is really bursty and feels great to play (2h obliteration). AoE is lacking compared to BoS but you can still do enough to do up to +20.
If you have any questions about how to setup and play 2h frost, shout out.

Unholy is incredibly clunky in its current form. The one advantage I see it having is better uptime or at least partial uptime due to pet damage.
Frost is far more enjoyable imo, I’d prefer to play obliterate but it just doesn’t compare to BoS due to most of the cleave focused design, and even then breath seems to always perform better. Note that if you play breath and don’t pool RP or can’t stay on a target to keep breath going, you will do no damage whatsoever.
My vote is for frost.

So…a really basic way of looking at it just from how they may feel.
Unholy has higher damage during it’s cooldowns but the spec kind of plays like it’s a car with square wheels. You’ll feel weak outside your cooldowns, more so than frost does.
Frost feels great at times, it’s cooldowns are weaker and less in number than unholy but you’ll also feel stronger outside them because of killing machine, it’s also more straightforward and fluid than unholy.
Personal taste, try both for a day and see what you like.
I really appreciate the info. I’m in your boat in that I’m not a huge fan of pets either so I’ll likely focus on frost. I’d greatly appreciate advice on 2h oblit since that wouldn’t require me farming 1h.
Leggos: Koltiras favor for raids, Biting cold for m+
NL or Kyrian for covenant.
Talents 1/2/3/1/-/1/2.
basically, pop PoF/ERW/Cov ability in syc whenever they are off CD…every 1min/2mins. Then use FwF on the last or second last CGD of your PoF window. Keep RW up as much as you can. press HB for rime procs, Oblit for KM procs. during PoF its FS/rime → Obliteration on repeat. don’t stress about over capping RP, like don’t purposely do it but if you are 100% RP and a KM procs then use oblit.
stats are ilvl>mastery>crit>haste(12.5%)>vers. Wont go into the haste thing because its probs a bit more than you need to know. But if you can get 12.5% for 2h you will be golden. anything above that is a bit of a waste unless you get to like 25%.
that’s pretty much it.
I raided last tier as unholy and the front end of this tier as unholy. I’m just now going frost.
Okay style wise, I find unholy much more forgiving. Death coil, clawing shadows if talented, pet, and your major CDs don’t require you to be on your target. So even when you do a mechanic heavy fight you still get pretty good numbers while moving.
I like frost better. It’s kit is very thematic and visual. You get to use 2h or DW for most of pve content. It’s pvp viable as 2h.
Both specs parse decently close. With a 262 leggo for both I can squeeze like 500-600 more dps out of unholy on the same fights but I’m not pushing content right now. It really doesn’t matter.
Mastery is deece for both dps specs, but awful for blood. Haste is good for blood and unholy (on my stat sims anyway). Crit was pretty much only wanted for frost.
Pvp wise I tend to die instantly if I ain’t Blood so I stick to Blood for pvp and I do way more dps since I stay alive lot longer.
I mained a fury warrior in bfa and wanted somthing with lower apm (my partner was going to snap my keyboard in half, curse her good hearing)
So i checked out unholy and i love it, you can build for single target and be half ranged or build for banging AoE.
Yes it takes abit to set up but once its 2nd nature you can really pull the numbers.
