Frost Mage Tower Coaching

Hello, I am a 403 mage and struggling with the frost challenge tremendously. I probably have 100 attempts on it at this point.

I was able to complete all of the Rogue, Demon Hunter, and Death Knight challenges during Legion however I am finding it neigh impossible to complete the frost challenge this time around.

I’ve watched a number of successful videos, read guides, and tried many things but cannot seem to get it.

Are there any mages who have completed this challenge during Dragon Flight that would be willing to lend 20 or 30 minutes to a fellow mage in hopes of completing this challenge?

Thanks,
Turbo

Unfortunately, I haven’t done it yet in Dragonflight, so I don’t know how the tuning is compared to previous iterations.

I do know, however, that you’ll get better help if you are more specific about the problems you’re having.

Hi Samarana, thanks for your reply.

I think the largest issue is with maintaining health during the final phase. It seems that I don’t have enough mitigation/regen/etc. to tank his casts while juggling the remainder of the encounter and simultaneously putting out enough damage to end it.

Is Karam dying? You can’t kill him this time around like you could in Legion, or else Raest enrages and there’s really nothing you can do to prevent that kind of damage coming your way.

Unfortunately, Raest’s tanky enough that Karam can die due to pure cleave damage before you bring him down, and I think the only way around that is to pull Karam off to the side during the final phase and polymorph him back to full health so that you get another chance.

Yes! I have been slaying him most runs in an attempt to make the kiting more manageable.

This is a very helpful piece of information and I had no idea that he would enrage. I will give this a shot tonight and see if I can press further in to the final phase.

Few things to try:
Use a macro to ice nova the twin that runs around and use it on cooldown.
/target Kaerm (check spelling)
/use Ice Nova

Use Incanters Flow and not ROP. If you were that good with ROP you’d probably have killed it by now. You’ll squeeze out more dps on the hands that pop up with IF.

Use Potion of Unbridled fury, howling runes and a weapon with a good enchant on it (sophic devotion or machinist brilliance). Unbridled fury pots do a LOT or burst damage during lust.

Practice your lust burn. On my kill I would lust first when the stationary twin became active and get him to about 68% reliably every single time. This was with gear for MT with sockets/etc. The more damage you pump out before both are active the better.

Try to kite the mobs in a way that leaves an opening for frozen orb to travel ontop of the stationary add. Its a lot of passive damage you miss out if the adds are blocking the boss.

Good luck, if you need more help make a video and I will review it.

Thanks, Vorddan - I am using a lot of the techniques you’ve described here however struggling to get past 50% on Raest.

I will work on putting together a good attempt video and flash my build / gear and share it here.

Thanks again,
Turbo

Are you using a feast, weapon rune, and flask? The best flask is from BFA, the best battle pot is from SF. I used hedonism feasts.

I would pop lust the first time Raest becomes active, also drop ravaging seed pod (trinket from legion EH first boss does a lot of damage) and usually get him to about 70%. Practice this, if you are only getting it to 80% then you may not have the right talents or gear setup.

Another thing is all of your gear is scaled down, items that have old socket slots can be useful with the +6 int, +9 int, or +12 int gems since your total intelligence is set to around 550 inside (I think?) with my gear. Basically with your stats so low every socket really helps. You can easily get a socketable 2hander from raids in MoP, and then put machinist brilliance on it which is a very good enchant. (has to be ilvl 140 or lower for brilliance, 141+ you can do celestial guidance.

I also tried to only use gear with Mastery/Haste if possible. Inside the challenge my stats with flask/oil/feast were 19% crit, 30% haste, 3% vers, 20% mastery. Having high haste really helps get off more frostbolts on the big hand adds into flurry which is free shatter procs. I used ravaging seed pod trinket and a trinket from s4 WoD Dungeon in SL that gives int+mastery static stats.

Here is a picture of my damage breakdown during my successful kill - https:/ /i.imgur .com/u0gPxDL.png

In summary my advice, optimize your gear to get more overall int, and haste. You can get a 2hander from MoP Raids (Siege or Throne of Thunder with socket guaranteed on it). You could 2x SF crafted rings “deadly sinvyr or quick sinvyr” rings that have a socket in them. That right there will get you some more damage out of your abilities since it should be at least 18 int if not more.

This is tremendously helpful and insightful, thank you very kindly for taking the time to think aloud and share with me (and any others benefitting from this thread too)!

I will use these takeaways and start building a set that incorporates the gem slots, it seems like that may be a big problem in my attempts.

Again, many many thanks, Vorddan!

My biggest advice as someone who did it is to craft a set with sockets and wffects and get comfortable with forst orb and blizzard placement.
