Leveling this mage in Classic Fresh, I have yet to spend any talent points as I’m on the fence on how I want to spend them.
From my research it seems that speccing for AOE (Improved Blizzard etc) is mainly done if you plan to AOE grind mobs. Whereas speccing single target focused (Ice Shards, Frostbite, Shatter, etc.) is typically better for general questing and dungeons.
I plan to just play normally by questing and doing dungeons and don’t really intend to do pure AOE grinding. However I DO like to do some AOE pulls while questing.
In this case, is it generally recommended to spec into single target talents? This way I have a good all-rounder build while still being able to pull off some AOE pulls within reason.
(Normal realm btw, so no PVP to worry about)
Any thoughts?
Aoe mages are so lame especially in the early open levels

Aoe farming only works if theres nobody in the area killing those mobs. Not to mention all the other mages trying to do the same thing and competing for the grind spot.
Single target is better for open world activity and questing imo

You’re a little behind to AE spec outside of caster cleaves (dungeons) but its effective after level 26
From what I remember if you want to do solo AoE pulls at all you need improved blizzard and you need to not take frost bite (or some mobs can freeze and be separated from the pack). You can still take the frost bolt / single target related talents otherwise.
What’s the best single target build? I thi k it’s fire with rank 1 frost bolt eight?
