Hello! I extensively watched a video guide on the Spellslinger (Ray of Frost variant) ST rotation for Frost Mage, and despite feeling like I was performing the rotation near-perfectly (with the occasional accidental Glacial Spike without a Flurry ready), I was only able to maintain a DPS of around 850K after dealing 600M damage on the training dummy in Dornogal. In the video, the guy was dealing about 1.3M sustained.
To be fair, my IL is only 617 and I don’t have Spymaster’s. My Crit is 30%, Haste is 26%, Mastery 15%, and Vers 6%. I didn’t have flask on. Can this gear/stat differential account for this much of a gap (450k)? I’m a returning player and just want to know if I’m playing the class horribly wrong, or if it’s mostly just that I need to be better geared and optimized. Thanks a ton!
The guy you’re comparing yourself to is
1: Ilvl 636
And
2: a master mage player
Seeing as you’re learning the rotation, I’d guess your rotation wasn’t as perfect as maybe you thought (meant to be a constructive criticism).
Raise your Ilvl, keep watching videos and guides and keep practicing!
Aside from that, it’s hard to help otherwise without seeing you actually play.

Yeah, and on top of optimized gear / top performance and reaction times, could also be flasks, potions, mana oils, and augment runes, since guides are trying to show potential output as well as explain the rotation.
This all makes sense guys - thanks! I’ll have to keep practicing and try to compare myself when I’m more geared and have the right buffs/etc.

I would also throw out there that the target dummy in dornogal can be a bit wonky when it comes to splinters I think but yeah getting above 620 you start to feel way stronger once you lock down the rotation (before it changes again lol)
Go warmode and get bloody tokens. Frost is fun.

You could utilize Raidbots as well to see what the site says you should be doing with your gear, and compare it to what you are. There are options to change buffs, how long fight is, etc
