Looks like even single target, Frost mages are using the AOE spec and not even casting frost bolt.
I think it’s a cool unique ranged caster playstyle, but I’m worried that it will get “fixed”
Any thoughts? Is the current spellslinger playstyle intended? Will it last?
They are using the aoe spec in raid, because there are a lot of adds to use our aoe spells on. Not because the aoe spec is better in st. As for us not casting frostbolt, thats because our rotation is currently dominated by ice lance. We do still cast frostbolt, and will be casting it significantly more come 11.0.5 when they remove this playstyle.

do you have some insider knowledge about them changing how frost works? I would love to do a frostbolt build but it is dependent on icy veins and it does not do as much damage as glacier spike/ray of frost build.
Count your blessings, I mean do you want to be channeling?
It’s much better to have instant damage in your toolbox. Especially in PvP.

frost bolt build has its issues. as i said it is dependent on icy veins. but that said it required to you use fingers of frost and brain freeze to extend icy veins time line. it just works against the build. because you are not casting frost bolt or frost fire bolt.
How do you build up shards for glacial spike if you always use ice lance, or is glacial spike not part of this particular build?
Ice Lance and Flurry both generate shards also. It isn’t just Frostbolt anymore!
Personally, while I do have windows of doing uber dps as spellslinger flinging ice lance constantly, I can’t stand that playstyle and the reliance on RNG orbs and splinters proc’ing the resets. I play as Frostfire. My damage might not burst as high as spellslinger can get with excellent RNG, but it’s far more consistent at least. I keep trying spellslinger here and there and just groan the whole time and go back to FF, lol.
I used my level boost and am just starting as frost mage. So far, I really like it because of instant casts.
I have to read up on shard generation, I feel like I already had to learn frozen debuff mechanics.
But, just so I am clear, Ice Lance–which uses shards–also generates shards?
I am a total noob, so help me out here. I have been practicing my shimmer, nova, ultra combo.
Last question, what do you have as backup if you are silenced?
I have dabbled with it off and on here and there, so I am by no means an expert. Outside of TWW, the last time I put this much play into a frost mage (really, into a mage at all) was TBC when I was a twink in the 30s bracket LOL.
If you go into your spellbook and hover over “Mastery: Icicles” it will tell you what generates them.
Mine reads: “Casting Frostbolt, Ice lance, or Flurry Grants you an Icicle. Casting Ice Lance causes all Icicles stored to begin launching at the target, each dealing 24,407 Frost Damage. Up to 5 Icicles can be stored. Any excess Icicles gained will be automatically launched. Increases the damage of Frozen Orb, Blizzard, and Comet Storm by 19%. Increases the damage of Ice Lance, Glacial Spike, and Raw of Frost by 12%.”
Does that help? Given that I don’t play without Glacial Spike (much to my dismay, as I don’t actually like GS) I couldn’t tell you what happens if you push Ice Lance, haha. I’d imagine it would either immediately launch what is stored and then add a brand new icicle or it’ll add an icicle and launch it simultaneously? No clue.
Prayers. LOL. I am assuming this is a PVP related question? I very seldom experience silence in a PVE setting, and I haven’t mage PVP’d since TBC.
Yeah, last was a PvP question. Guessing I should have one fire or arcane spell if it happens.
use ring of fire in pvp for situations like this. we also have a few arcane spells that can be used during this time as well
Thanks dude. I have seen frost mages pop ring of fire in arena.
