Frost mage aoe

Im having a hard time pumping numbers in frost mage SS in mythic +. I consider myself a good mage and I have a 2600 Io (so I’m not useless). I am absolutely struggling with aoe damage outside of Icy veins. I am doing the rotation to a T and yet if I don’t have IV popped my damage always seems behind the rest. Am I missing something or has mage really become useless outside of its CDs in ever spec?

in my experience we need to cast alot of frost bolts even in aoe so we can get splinter procs in order to reset our frozen orb cooldowns.

In AOE situations I tend to ice lance only when im moving and rest of the time I’m frost bolting to reset flurry and using flurry combos with frostbolt and glacial spike in order to generate spliters and send t hem out which resets frozen orb which gives us insta + damage blizzard which stacks up pretty good and the glacial spike damage is pretty high as well.

No, that’s not the case. You’d barely even cast Frostbolt at all in AoE at least as Spellslinger and in M+ you don’t take Death’s Chill.

And yes, without Icy Veins you’re down to your luck a lot more because you don’t have the double splinter generation to help with Orb resets.

yea I only take deaths chill if im doing something above 11+ most of the time I take the non deaths chill m+ spec.

But outside of icy veins what else would you do if you dont even have an orb up other than frost bolt? I mean seems like the only good time to ice lance is either moving or when you have winters chill up. Since frostbolt is the only way to gain flurry procs out side of icy veins wouldnt it be better to keep frostbolting till you get a flurry and by that time youd have enough icicles to glacial spike so youd either frostbolt flurry into glacial spike or glacial spike into flurry.

It depends on how many targets we’re talking about here. If it’s enough, Blizzard will take Frozen Orb off cooldown really fast and you won’t be casting Frostbolt at all and you also have Spellfrost Teachings procs to reset it as well, just not as many as if you were in Icy Veins.
