Frost DK Noob here

First time trying frost while leveling atm, and I’ve got a question for the wiser DKs here.

What do you use to pull mobs? As Unholy, casting Outbreak to pull has become second nature. It’s easy and required for good damage anyway.

But what about frost? From what I’ve read, Howling Blast should only be used if you have a Rime proc, and Chains of Ice should only be used with the strength buff from Pillar of Frost.

What do you use to pull mobs? Do you just walk up to all of them individually or do you use a rune in a less than optimal way?

Usually Death Grip.

You always apply howling blast even without rime proc to keep the dot up use that to pull or death grip

Just pulling a mob? I use howling blast every time because it pulls everything near it and frost basically never dies so you can kill them all and live through it.

I you need to just pull one, death grip is great.

As for the rules of “never us HB without rime” etc, I would maybe consider that stuff in raid boss fights, but not for questing. Howling blast plies a dot to everything and at the start of some AOE, you need frost fever on all the things. In single target it might make more sense to only can HB with rime, but again it applies frost fever and is ranged, so perfect for pulling even a single mob.

Chains is used any time you want something slowed not really for its damage, except maybe with cold heart talent. But again, I would not worry about it while levelling, use it as a slow.

Also true for boss fights. It’s a dps gain to reapply dot with a howling blast without a rime proc.

Here is a tip for you. Open the talent page, click on blood or unholy specialization, and click, change specialization.

I really appreciate all the replies. Perhaps I was over complicating it. For some reason, this spec is harder for me than all the others. I like the feel, and I feel like everyone and their mother is playing unholy.
