Frost DK help

What am I doing wrong? I feel like my DPS is 1000-1500 lower than it should be. I’m using a olberation 2 hand build. Any advice is appreciated.

More info is needed to give any meaningful advice.

But your gear and stats distribution seems to be good.

Basic advice would be to maintain uptime as much as possible, have FF on as many targets as possible, positioning to maximize cleave, dnd on 5+ targets, when to use FwF and RW based on dmg phases, runes and RP available and what procs to prioritize depending on the situation.

Though i doubt you really need any of these.

Edit: This also assumes that you feast or at least mastery food + flask+stone and str pot on key PoF windows.

That does help. I think I just gotta do better mechanically during the oh crap phases. I do think my single target is weaker than my multi target.

You might wanna raise your crit. In fact, if you’re gonna 2h Frost as PvE with Obliteration build you wanna prioritize Mastery/Crit. Mastery/Vers if you’re PvPing.

Well your better off going dw obliteration build for pve and grab RW Lego and if you are running pvp grab absolute zero and run 2hander

There’s also the fact that as 2H the dmg gap between a rime and KM proc is much larger making KM a higher priority as 2h depending on the number of targets as opposed to the much weaker DW Kms.

There’s also little things like never letting your runic power cap unless you’d miss out on KM procs during PoF or big dmg windows.

And other little things like using your AMS to generate RP either by soaking unavoidable dmg or actively seeking dmg to generate some.

Two handed frost can perform competitively with DW - Looks like you’ve had some logs uploaded for some heroic fights.

Based on your logs - you might just need more practice hitting a training dummy.

Speaking to Hungering Destroyer:

Stop casting Death and Decay. You really only cast this with 3+ targets (probably more to be honest) - in Castle Nathria Heroic, really you should only cast it on Sunking when there is a bunch of adds.

Stop casting Death Strike. You are casting it all the time and this is killing your DPS. You can use it if it will save your life, otherwise stop pressing it.

During Pillar of Frost as Obliteration - You should be “weaving” between Obliterate and either Howling Blast or Frost Strike. You cast Howling Blast when you get a Rime proc otherwise cast Frost Strike. These will guarantee you get Killing Machine (which is your Obliterate crit proc).

Continuing to look through, I’d recommend checking out a basics video on how to play Frost DK. Bicepspumps has a great video guide on Youtube that can get you started with Frost DKs.

Your crit is much too low. Versatility does pretty much nothing for the spec in terms of pve. Crit will allow for more KM procs which means more full damage Obliterates outside of the PoF window. Having low crit on a low base attack speed weapon is going to severely cut your dps in just how the spec functions. You should probably be somewhere over 20% crit at a baseline.

No play adjustments are going to fix that the lack of KM procs and that can only really be fixed through gearing. Just like back in wrath, it there is nothing you could do to increase your dps though player actions if you had a lack of hit, or if you were a tank there was nothing you could do if you werent defense/avoidance capped so you couldnt be crit. Crit is important even to a certain % if anything.

I haven’t reviewed your logs just yet but to add on to Egotistic’s post, what abilities are you prioritising? If you haven’t done so already - outside PoF windows, if you have a rime/KM clash, rime first. Your KM has a chance to proc rime again (obviously).

Your haste is decent enough for ERW / PoF windows, but yeah, you definitely need to get some more crit.

Align ERW with PoF obviously, but also pop PoF on CD after as well.

… that’s some huge mastery though I’m actually a bit jealous haha

Yeah I can’t seem to get Crit…hopefully vault is nice tomorrow

I would 100% focus more on your gameplay than your stats. People tend to heavily overvalue the impact of stat distributions.

Get ilvl, practice your PoF windows and your normal rotation and you’ll see your dps go up significantly!

I dont think people are heavily overvaluing crit and mastery, I think people are trying to equate Frost to other specs that can do well with ilvl, while other specs also need the stats to go along with the spec to actually function. Ive simmed myself vs others that have higher ilvl but dont worry about stats and their dps is hardly any different from mine, and thats around 20 ilvl overall that results in basically no gain.

This doesn’t sound right, could you provid examples?

I think I can see where she’s getting at. It may not be a significant amount, but when I had an item level of 204 with 17% haste and 40% mastery (and a 207 weapon) the Sims were showing 5.1k dps, but now it has gone down to 4.9k.

I’m not disputing what you say, just to be clear here, but I have been seeing this with raidbots which may seem to check out. I know the topic is about frost, but I’ve seen this happening with my gear set up for a while. I have been trying to prioritize item lvl>stats and that has been kind of bugging me a bit

Edit: I think they Sims take stats into account over itemlvl. Just simmed again with the gear that I used to have that pushed my haste and mastery up and the result was high than what I have now at 209 item lvl. So in practice the itemlvl over stat argument may be right, but the simulations says it’s wrong.

Another edit! I did it a again, but with my current gear and the 213 hyperlight band that I have in place of the 200 item level ring that is on my character right now and it only goes from 4,908k to 4,934. Mastery seems to be the case here with 9% haste (that’s where my haste will drop with the higher itlvl ring).

Yep. Every Sim according to the bots says that other gears gives more dps over what I have now. But, that may not be the case in practice so both of you may be right in what you say, but the difference just comes from simulations vs in game performance :man_shrugging:

I rather not point people out, but it the argument was kind of the same. We were talking about stats and how certain stats are so much better than just randomizing your itemization for Frost. It was around 100dps difference for 20 ilvl increase. Not what I would call significant in any way for constantly saying ilvl is king.

Could you provide a link to this specific sim?

Unfortunately I cant. But I was just comparing someone that was getting certain stats to someone that was just putting whatever they got on.

My best guess would be better weapon and trinket optimisation. Generally much more impactful than your specific stat distribution

One of my weapons is of heroic dungeon quality, and one of my trinkets is an on use crit trinket that is also of heroic dungeon ilvl.
