Friend tries to compare WoW to Destiny 2

How could you make the comparison? Friend says Destiny 2 is better because there’s no leveling you get put right into the middle of the action. There’s no activities that take a long time to do (Can’t confirm this myself but there seems to be a lot of things you have to grind). Friend claims WoW should ditch leveling and just put you at max level to skip the boring leveling. I’m just confused on how you compare Destiny 2 to WoW. Two completely different games. Anyone play both give their opinions on comparison to WoW? What does destiny 2 do better?

Two different types of games. Destiny is an fps with progression.

Destiny 2 had MANY issues at launch… Throttling exp gain and lying about it, focus on the cash shop because making content is hard, during holidays events you had to go to the cash shop, and the limited use shaders.

I recall leveling in destiny 2… Unless they changed it. Also it had quite a few grinds but it’s not really comparable to WoW at all.

I used to play Destiny 1 hard core.
They used to be two different games with some similarities.
Shadowlands and Destiny 2 have become more similar.
Checklist simulators.

There isn’t leveling per se but you still have to upgrade your power level every season by 50 levels which can be somewhat of a pain / grind if you’re short on upgrade modules or keep getting duplicate drops for gear.

Though starting next season, season 14, instead of 50, it’s going down to 10.

It really is hard to compare the two.

And nah there aren’t many traditional “MMO grinds” in Destiny, You can grind for perfect or preferential weapon rolls and armor stats which can take a while depending on RNG.

Having played both, the gear progression is kind of the same, or at least evokes the same feeling.

As you get higher level, the gear stays slightly higher level than you through the public events and quests and stuff. They’re two completely different games, but they give that same feeling of uh…

…endlessly upgrading gear that keeps you on the treadmill.

Destiny 2 i stopped playing that on and off and finally quit for good when they decided the best way to keep the game size down is to remove inter dlc world that ppl payed for

And with that kinda move i will prob never play another destiny ever again

I played destiny 2 near launch and stopped when I was unable to do the next story quest due to being too low level. I think I was maybe level 17 at the time.

Never went back to check if they fixed that. :man_shrugging:

I just find it strange how my buddy keeps comparing Destiny 2 to wow and saying Destiny 2 does everything better lol. No leveling, easier in and out content, less grinding, etc… I just got kinda turned off when I saw you have to grind out repetitive content similar to wow to get better gear in the game. I do enough of that in WoW .

I keep reading here that they’re not in a similar category and I disagree.

WoW has become a dungeon runner lobby game that’s heavily instanced.

Destiny 2 is essentially that only every single “zone” you play in acts as an instance which is relative to WoW’s sharding system (you only see X players at any given time as players are layered over each other in the same coordinates just in different iterations of the map).

Destiny 2 has limited gear, WoW has limited gear. Destiny 2 has somewhat linear character customizations in that it’s limited, WoW is still very limited relative to REAL MMO’s on the market. Destiny 2 favors group content vs solo, WoW forces group vs solo to play end-game. Destiny 2 has instanced PvP, WoW has instanced PvP because warmode is essentially dead.

Destiny 2 has a central “hub” where only X amount of players can be seen at any one time, WoW has a central “hub” oribos where only X amount of players can be seen at any one time (again due to shards instancing).

Etc. etc. much more similarities than you think.

Some of Destiny’s exotics or their catalysts can take a long time to grind out.

They’re completely different games and despite Bungie calling Destiny an MMO, it’s not one. The only “Massive Multiplayer” is in the Tower, which has like 20 people max.

To try and compare the two is laughable. About the only similarities between WoW and Destiny is the loot treadmill for progression

They’re similar only in a handful of ways:

  1. Both have very clear gear progression systems. You get new gear from doing harder content.
  2. Both have secondary stats that benefit different classes in various ways.
  3. Both have instanced group content that’s q’able
  4. Both have harder group content that is not q’able, requiring friends or community
  5. Both have weekly and daily questions/missions to be completed for various rewards.
  6. Both operate on different kinds of RNG. I think D2 has much LESS RNG though.
  7. Both have content that gets “locked” or “vaulted” or otherwise made irrelevant or inaccessible.

The biggest comparison to me is the gear. Just like it wow there’s a pretty clear like… “soft cap” of 200~ , D2 has one too, to the point that your only upgrades eventually can only come from specific content on the harder end of the spectrum.

But in terms of raw, immediate game play, D2 is ultimately an FPS, which changes things quite a bit in terms of enjoyment lol.

I can’t play Destiny 2 due to texture flickering issues.

What difference is there between challenge-less leveling and challenge-less pre-content gearing?

Your friend does not have much experience with Destiny if they believe this.

You do still have to level, and there is a significant gear grind and it is based on weekly content clears. It can also be easy to fall behind by missing one or two weeks of clearing content.

What Destiny 2 does better than wow: Graphics, gameplay (the gunplay is phenomenal), class balance, PvP, encounter design, Dev passion, rewarding loot, and most importantly of all: Story. The Destiny story is fantastic. I just wish I was independently wealthy so that I didn’t have to work and could dedicate the time necessary to keep up with the weekly gear grind necessary to stay relevant and continue to experience the game properly.

I literally started playing it again last night cause it seemed like a good game to play to get a little wow break.
I honestly don’t like that they removed the leveling and the base game content in general as I really enjoyed it. There is no leveling progression, it just throws you in with little to no explanation.
The only thing I compare destiny and wow is that every piece of gear has a power level (ilvl) associated with it. Other then that they are completely different games. One is a fast paced shooter and the other is a straight RPG. The difference of 3 abilities and a few guns to have 20ish different abilities is hardly comparable.

I haven’t played Destiny 2 in a long, long time. I will say though that Bungie is still the kings when it comes to gunplay, nothing else can compare.

I’m bias myself.

I was sold a different game when I pre-ordered the first Destiny. The second one felt very copy and paste to me. All I really remember was getting to max level then the game pretty much said “All you can do is grind for nothing now” I laughed then stopped playing.
