Frequent freezing and crashing in 8.3

Since 8.3 my game has been regularly freezing for several seconds whenever a new UI element appears for the first time since launch. In addition to things like opening the character pane, or the quest log, or the mounts window, however, it’s ALSO freezing when I trigger a world quest and the NPC dialogue box pops up. The freeze only affects WoW; the rest of my computer is not impacted. When it unfreezes, I can often see several graphic elements reloading; primarily objects in the distance. On at least one occasion it has crashed out entirely, and the error I got suggested that this is a memory-related issue. This occurs even with my Addons disabled.

There are several threads talking about this. One of the suggested solutions that worked for me was

Esc > System > Advanced > Grahpics API > Direct X 11 (Legacy)

Setting that to legacy instead of standard DX11 solved my issue. Others are saying it didn’t work, but the number of those who saw this fix their issues (myself included) suggests you should give this a try =)

I second Vertgineux, had the same issue and it was fixed by changing DX11 to the legacy version.

Also note that every major patch resets you graphics to default for some reason, so if, like me, you play at lower settings, you’re going to have to set it back up.

So far it looks like that solved the problem. Thanks Vertigineux!

Thank you so much.

I have a friend with a weaker rig who was having the issue of his game freezing when talking heads came up - he even failed a vision due to a long talking-head related freeze earlier. After some googling, I found a thread which linked to this one.

I had him switch to DX11 Legacy mode, and as well as clearing up those freezes, his bags are loading instantly again, and his overall framerate has improved. I also reminded him to check his other settings and he discovered it had disabled his Projected Textures (which the game really should never be doing), so he got those back on, too.

Super useful tip about DX11 Legacy mode.
