I just pre-purchased the epic edition of the new xp, and now I can’t do any pet battles without getting an error message about free trial accounts. I have an active subscription to WoW currently, and have for years.

Do you happen to have two profile account subscriptions? Like a WOW2 profile in addition to your main.
This happens to me on my second account if I log into a character on my primary account first. It doesn’t let me do pet battles on my second account if I am already logged in on my primary account first.
Other than that I am not sure.
