Not the usual hardware forums stuff but thought this might be of interest.
The company is still young and unproven, but there’s a lot of good ideas here. Brings a lot of what makes desktops appealing to a laptop, without turning said laptop into a 50lb dinosaur or looking like something you duct taped together in your garage.
To sum it up:
- Storage, RAM, and networking are socketed instead of soldered
- It’s fully configurable, allowing you to order it without SSD, RAM, WiFi, USB-C power adapter, or Windows license so you can provide your own and save a few bucks
- Has an option to be purchased without assembly for a discount, eliminating QC problems for buyers with technical competence to build it themselves
- Uses a standardized mainboard design that will allow CPU+chipset to be upgraded in the future
- Parts are readily available for purchase to allow repairs and upgrades
- USB-C based port modules let you choose which ports you want and swap them out as needed, as well as transferring power adapter wear and tear away from an integrated port onto an $8 module
- Company will be releasing schematics on port modules and many parts, enabling community-made parts
- Great specs on display, webcam, mics, and KB/trackpad
- Electrical hardware switches on webcam/mics (as in when switched off, they cannot function)
It’s no powerhouse and won’t be good for gaming (except Classic or old games maybe), but it’d be a nice highly portable complement to a desktop gaming rig or less-lap-friendly gaming laptop. Considering buying one myself just for the build experience.
