Framerate Issue Post-8.1

My pertinent specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Core i7 4700HQ @2.40Ghz.
Nvidia GTX 850M
Creative Sound BlasterX G1
16GB RAM
Crucial mx300 SSD

All drivers are at their most-current version.

My graphical settings:

With my specs and those settings I got good performance prior to 8.1. In older areas and dungeons I got 60-70 FPS consistently unless a ton of particles popped up. In crowded cities I’d drop down to 45-55 FPS, and in Legion and BfA areas I got between 35-55 FPS.

Due to financial reasons I had to drop my sub temporarily before 8.1 dropped. I recently made a new character under the starter edition limitations and what I came back to is pretty terrible. My framerate has taken a hit and now supposedly hovers around 30-45 near-constantly. I say supposedly because despite what the in-game framerate indicator says, it looks and feels much lower. I’m used to lower frames in newer content, and it’s not the same.

The game is also constantly microstuttering to a headache-inducing level. It’s like footage of a game running at 10 FPS but the video is sped up. It LOOKS faster but you can almost count the individual frames rendering.

This is what I’ve tried:

  • Updating Nvidia drivers

  • Rolling back Nvidia drivers, trying multiple sets all the way back to October, each time using DDU to full uninstall the previous and clean the system prior to installing a new set

  • Reset all of my graphical options. Lowering them has no effect unless I put everything to its lowest, then the issues go away. Bumping anything above the lowest settings however brings it back

  • Updated all of my addons (no effect), followed by disabling them (no effect)

  • Reset my UI

  • Ran a complete malware scan of my system (no problems), followed by a thorough cleaning with CCleaner and a few other similar apps.

  • Set WoW to high-priority mode

  • And of course restarted the game, BNet client, and my system, multiple times

Nothing has changed regarding my system specs since 8.0 and I was running the game just fine before.

Here is my DXDiag, however the video information will be of limited use. My system has dual video cards, with the Intel HD4600 as the low-power GPU, and the Nvidia GTX 850M as the high-performance one. And DXDiag will only detect the HD4600 as the primary, regardless of what I do.

Change the Graphics Card from Auto Detect to the 850M. Make sure you computer is set to High Performance.

This sounds like it is using your integrated card and not your Nvidia graphics card.

Afraid not. Did that already. No effect.

System is always on High Performance And no, I know instantly when it tries to use the HD4600 instead of the 850M. I’ve had a few times where I misclicked and instead of logging out I exited the game. I hit “Play” on the launcher so fast that it relaunched with the HD4600 and I got single-digit frames on the login screen.

Absolutely nothing has changed in this system other than updating drivers since I unsubbed. And it was fine before. I’ve seen multiple reports of similar framerate issues with DX11 since 8.1 launched. I’m assuming there’s an issue with the game itself and some DX11 setups now. They did make changes to the renderer to support multipath rendering under DX12. Wouldn’t surprise me if this was an unexpected bug. I’m posting in the hopes that if it is a new bug, the more data they have on affected systems, the better. But of course it it turns out to be a user-addressable issue, I’d love to find out.

Edit: OP, BTW. For some reason it posted under my Shaman despite me having my Hunter selected originally.

I have also been having awful FPS issues since 8.1 Like you I have stutter around 30-60 in the outside world but in arenas/dungeons I get 5-20 FPS making the game unplayable at times…

Because I’m unsubbed ATM and the only character I can login to is level 10, I haven’t been able to see what it’s like in dungeons. But in the open world it’s basically unplayable with the microstuttering. If it were simply a framerate in the 30s it wouldn’t be so bad. But the chop-chop-chop-chop-stutter-stutter rubber-banding is absolutely intolerable.

So I’ve noticed something. When inside a completely enclosed space (like a tower) the issue goes away entirely. Framerate shoots back up to 70 and the microstuttering stops. Higher frames in interior locations is to be expected. Less stuff to render. However what’s new is when I so much as even look in the direction of the door to the outside world, framerate tanks and microstutter hits again.

I don’t even have to leave the enclosed space. Simply looking at the exit to the outside, even if there’s barely anything visible out there, is enough. So yeah, something’s funky.

I’m having all these same issues. I’ve followed all the steps in Blizzard’s guide for fixing latency. The issue is not on my end. There’s something about the last patch which is causing lag spikes and drops in FPS.

Did you try DX12 yet instead?

Already updated everything. Followed every step in Blizzard’s fixing latency guideline. All drivers are updated.

Not sure who your reply is directed to, but if me, I can’t use DX12 because I’m on Windows 7, and its exclusive to Windows 10.

As an update, I finally suffered through the issues and got a character high enough to use LFG. Yeah, something’s utterly broken. In something as simple as RFC or Deadmines my framerate was always at 70 minimum, and often got up to 90. Now it’s 45 or lower even when just standing still, with major stuttering and frame drops frequently.

Peeps, if you suddenly have issues with framerates (like me today)
check your windows.

For no reason or authorization some windows processes like MsMpeng.exe was doing unauthorized activity on drives and files (which i personally excluded from Windows Defender from being scanned)

Also Windows Search was snooping around on my drives at the same time (while i disabled this), found out windows had reverted my privacy settings and tweaks after an update and caused my system to slow down and lag.

Also if you have an nvidia graphics card, install “Geforce experience” and check optimal settings for WoW.
in my case it selects directx 11 and adjusted my internal settings and gained a whopping 30 fps without seeing much difference ingame of quality loss.

Checked my system. No issues with Defender (primarily since I don’t have it installed, but MSE since I’m under W7.) And since I’m on an SSD I disabled most of Windows Search a long time ago (no need to index and cache file details.)

The Geforce Experience program itself is a resource drain and can cause performance issues, and I nuked it long ago as well. You can adjust your GPU settings with the nVidia Control Panel shortcut without needing GFE.

But thanks for the tips anyway.

I have the same card, Intel® HD Graphics 4600 as you, op. After a patch last November, I could not play. Support told me my card is no longer compatible and that forced me to quit. I came here to see if anyone else has this problem. I have Windows 10 and DX12. I can’t afford a fancy new computer. Sucks.

Unfortunately the HD 4600 chipset is very low-performance and indeed is not up to the task of running the game. In my situation, my laptop has dual video cards, The Intel HD 4600 is the low-power one used for non-demanding things like Windows, while the dedicated Nvidia card runs games.
