I have just switched over to a new M1 Max MacBook Pro. Oddly when I log in the frame rate starts at 100 which is my cap but then in seconds drops to 6 to 9. This happens no matter what graphic setting. I’ve tried it as low as 1 and as high as 10. No difference. Any ideas?
Hey there,
When you switched over was this a clean install or did you copy everything over from the old system. That process is not perfect and issues can arise with performance or stability in such situations.
If this was a clean install then do make sure you have all system updates from software center and then try the following:
If you have any addon managers installed. They are fine programs but they have the tendency to prevent our troubleshooting steps from working. Please uninstall them and leave them off your system until we have solved the problem.
Once that is confirmed, we need to delete the temporary game files to attempt to eliminate any corrupt data that might be affecting the client or characters. Your game will rebuild them when you next login but this will remove all installed addons. Please do not reinstall any addons until we know the issue is resolved: https://battle.net/support/article/7549
Let’s reset the in game user options:
- Click the blue bnet icon on the bnet app.
- Choose settings, then game settings.
- Click the reset in game user options button under the correct game listing.
- Confirm the changes and close the window.
We will want to run the repair tool on the game client: https://battle.net/support/article/7655
Try running your system in selective startup mode: https://battle.net/support/article/200483
Our clients do not support installation on encrypted drives using programs such as File Vault. There can be issues installing, updating, launching or connection issues due to the encryption. If drive encryption has been enabled, please disable it and allow the drive to decrypt: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/31354
Create a new administrator account: https://battle.net/support/article/34550
Once the account is created, shut down the computer, wait 60 seconds, restart, log into the new profile and try the app/client.
Beyond that, I recommend submitting a ticket to support for more in depth assistance as we would need specific system data to dig into this further and I wouldn’t recommend trying to post it here.
Click the support button at the top of the page, then choose “contact support” be sure to include the requested system files.
M1 max macbook pro will overheat and throttle with default fan control unfortunately. Apple would still rather have an overheating/throttling laptop than a loud one functioning one.
You can avoid this running software like “macs fan control” and setting up a profile to ramp fans up based on gpu temperature. but even with fans at MAX, gpu cores runs at about 85-90C under full load (it won’t throttle anymore though). it’s not a cool running chip in a macbook pro (it runs much cooler in the mac studio though).
It’s also worth considering following graphics settings to actually get 120fps consistently without any notable quality loss and at reduced load tempatures
Render scale 50%
advanced options have fidelity super resolution activatte.
Compute effects OFF on regular settings
Water changed from ultra to good in zerith morris (there is a bug in this zone that makes the water reflections that don’t even exist on water, tank performance)… can use ultra water in other zones though.
Once you change those settings you’ll find you hear fans way less even with max cooling profile and use less power and generate less heat in quite a few areas while still retaining high detail
