**FPS drops/stutter** HELP!

I am actually unsure when this problem started but I know it had to have been around SoD or shortly after for me, but for some reason I get these very short(1-3sec) FPS drops/stutter in game almost always in instances. Game will drop to 10ish FPS then back up to 120.

This issue has been driving me insane to try to narrow down.

I have done all the things you would say to try to fix this problem

-Turn off all addons
-Reinstalled game
-New WTF/Interface folders
-New Windows install
-DX12/DX11/DX11Legacy
-Game on Different Drives
-New Motherboard
-New Router

I play at 4k with medium/high settings and have adjusted every in-game setting and still get this issue.

Hardware:
-10850k
-64g RAM(3600Mhz)
-RTX 3080ti
-LG 48’ C1 4k
-ADATA 1TB NVMe SSD(tried other 2 drives too with same effect)

I mean I have trouble shot this for weeks now with nothing. Tried so many things but still have this problem. No problem in hordes of other games I play. I mean I can play almost all AAA titles at 4k and keep a steady 60+ FPS(more like 100+) without issue.

I have seen some other people saying they have the same problem and it just started with a patch around 9.0.5 or above. Just depends on the person when their issue started.

This problem is driving me CRAZY!!! Please help! If you have had this issue and were able to solve it or have any answers, I would be much obliged.

what does your monitoring software say about your gpu and cpu temps and load? also how is the tv physically connected to the pc? also is it an actual fps drop and not just mouse stutter or freezing?

GPU and CPU well within okay temps(50-70c range)

LG C1 connected via hdmi 2.1 Zeskit Maya cable

Yes it is 100% an FPS drop

Post a dxdiag report.

The errors at the end of the log are showing a lot of app crashes in other games, as well as curseforge.

You’ll probably want to run an SFC on your OS, but chances are it will say nothing is wrong:

Make sure your BIOS is up to date and that you aren’t using any boost settings within it. Reset the BIOS to defaults and avoid any overclocking features. Also make sure to use a normal fan profile and not some silent mode.

Double check to make sure you haven’t messed too much with other windows settings and things in the registry. Lots of gamers follow snakeoil guides that tell them to disable this, enable that, change priority of this app, close that, change these registry keys, etc etc, undo any of them if you’ve messed around with any of them.

BIOS is up to date and those app crashes are just me setting up DX4WINDOWS recently getting a PS5 controller to work with my PC. These issues are long before those happened.

Same with any changes made to BIOS, this problem has persisted over 2 motherboards. First a z590 ASUS TUF and now a z490 MSI ACE.

Additionally, this is the ONLY game I have had an issue with. WoW was fine all through SoD, I am assuming some patch around SoF played some role in this.

Event Name: CLR20r3 Type events usually mean corruption of some sort. Again, I recommend you run an SFC and maybe a DISM on your Windows installation.

I highly doubt any massive change was made on their rendering engine that could have caused this problem. Playing a few other games and not having them crash on you is just anecdotal evidence. The culprit is likely your system. It could be bad hardware, software, corruption, etc.

You might also want to try a selective startup where you disable everything. Mouse softwares, like iCue/Razer/GHUB/etc, are also notorious for clashing with games that have anticheat protection.

On last thing other thing is to do a UI reset, where you delete/rename your WTF/Interface folders, but make sure to run the command /console cvar_default (included in the advanced clickdown menu on the Blizzard support page for doing a UI reset) after logging in fresh. It could be a bad cvar that does something like jacking up the spell effect densities beyond what the options normally allow. Lots of addons mess with CVARs that then remain permanently changed, even if you do a local UI reset, until you do a cvar_default reset on them because they are stored on the Blizzard servers.

Well, I seemed to have cracked the code.

I unplugged my two 27’ displays in my setup and now I get no stutters. I am wondering if it is because they are at different hz or if it has something to do with them not supporting HDR.

I have ordered new cables for them, since I was using HDMI to display port adaptors. I am going to try replacing them with high quality HDMI to display port cables and see if the problem is still there.

I hope this helps someone with my issues. I will report back when I have found a fix.

Unless you’re running Windows 7 you’re going to have issues with multiple monitors having different refresh rates which is definitely what was causing your issue. If you have any kind of media playing or even something as small as your taskbar blinking on the lower refresh rate monitor from a notification or something will cause Windows to try to force your high monitor down to 60hz over and over again causing the stuttering.

The only fixes are to run a game in fullscreen which you can no longer do with WoW as they removed the option, drop your main monitor to match the second or get another monitor that matches your main.
