Forum App - Rotation Issues

Hello there!

The forum app for Android (is that the correct term?) keeps rotating even when I’m on Portrait mode.
This gets especially annoying when trying to read the forums in bed.

Is there a fix or is this just a bug?
Thanks in advance!

I’m confused.

The forum doesn’t have an app. You read it with your browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.). To keep the display in Portrait mode, you have to use the Android built-in toggle to lock display mode. It’s not an app thing, it’s system level.

And also, this subforum isn’t about the forums, it’s about Blizzard mobile applications: Companion App or Authenticator.

I’m having the same issue. My android rotation setting is set to NOT rotate yet it does anyway, and only for the forum app. It started happening right after I logged into a character. It’s an issue with the forum app. I’m sure the OP is smart enough to know when his rotation setting is on or off in android.

Also if this forum is for the companion app only then it needs to be made more clear, because it’s titled mobile bug report which in my mind also includes the mobile forum app.

It can’t be an issue with the forum app… There is absolutely no such thing as an app for the forums. Where are you getting the idea that there is an app? You have to use a mobile browser to access the forums. If it is rotating that would be an issue with your mobile browser. Blizzard doesn’t make mobile browsers.

Which is why this wouldn’t go in the mobile bug reports as there is no such thing as a mobile forums app made by Blizzard.

There’s an option when I load it on chrome to create an icon on the desktop, and when you choose that it creates an icon on the desktop that loads the webpage outside of the web browser. I thought it was creating a forum app since android calls it an “app”, but I guess it’s a special feature for chrome.

Either way, the rotation issues don’t happen when I load the site from chrome and not the desktop icon, so I assume it’s a problem with how it loads from the icon.

That would still be an issue with Chrome. Blizzard has nothing to do with that. You are simply creating an icon for a webpage, it is still using Chrome to launch it. There is nothing that Blizzard can do here as this isn’t something they have control of or could support.

I know, that’s what I said. For some reason it loads without any of the chrome toolbars, and tries to treat it as an app. It’s weird. But the solution is to just load it through the browser and not through the created app on the main page.

I’m not a web developer, so I’m not going to pretend I understand the ins and outs of this: but the forum website can have a Chrome progressive web app manifest (part of the website content, looks like a little JSON config file) which tells how Chrome should handle the website’s pages if they’re being viewed as a webapp instead of a browsed website.

Hey, Blizzard Forum Web Developers, google “chrome web app manifest page rotation”. The first search result looks pretty likely.

From my understanding that is only to enforce one kind of orientation, i.e. always be in portrait mode… That shouldn’t effect the orientation switching if the orientation lock is toggled on the phone. Unless the flag was that it should always load in landscape mode, which it isn’t doing.

Basically that is an either or statement that wouldn’t explain why it would allow the browser to enable orientation rotation when the phone is orientation locked.

Well, I just did an experiment to replicate OP’s report and sure enough, Android Chrome disregards the operating system’s aspect lock (Android 8.1 in my case) and does indeed rotate orientation when flipping the device from portrait to landscape. Craziest dang thing I’ve seen in a long time.

On the surface, I’d characterize this as a Chrome bug, because, damn, maybe it should honor the OS aspect lock? Crazy, amirite?

Blizzard could “fix” it by forcing portrait aspect in the manifest, but that would tick off folks who’d rather read in landscape.

The best answer would probably stop trying to use a Chrome webapp to access the forums, since it appears broke. At least until Chrome pulls its head out and begins respecting the OS setting.

Having the same problem, also on Android.

I am experiencing the same problem on Android here. The actual website in Chrome works fine. It is very annoying!
