Foreshadowed Letdowns?

Has there been anything in the history of wows questlines where you felt something was heavily foreshadowed by blizzard, just to be letdown? Or how long did it take for it to finally come to pass.

I always thought the peons in durotar were a telltale sign we would be able to become lumberjacks and collect wood on our own, of course it took until bfa warfronts to do so but blizzard never let me down.

The army of Light was foreshadowed as early as TBC to be this grand and holy army that would form and burn away the darkness of The Legion.

But it was actually like 12 draenei, a human and a dreadlord. Also their entrance to the lore was stepping on a rake and needing to be rescued.

Then they stole our space ship. Those guys are just the worst.

Oh boy.

  1. The Necromancer Ephial plot in WoD that went nowhere. Hell so much stuff in WoD, like Farahlon.

  2. The Grimtotem Forsaken plot that went nowhere.

  3. Neptulon being kidnapped by Ozumat; then freeing himself offscreen because the Abyssal Maw Raid was cut.

And so, so much other stuff written in minor questlines.

I thought the demon hunter scroll that was found in Darkshore during Cataclysm would be involved in having playable demon hunters. Nothing happened with that.

Blackhorn and Sensiria seemed set up to return with the Legion. “I’ll be back!” Seemed like a perfect way to fulfill those promises though they haven’t returned yet. It’s minor, but little things like that not getting fulfilled really annoy me. Makes me wonder what the point is to set up something like that then not follow through with it.

I really don’t like the Infinite - Bronze storyline this expansion. I was expecting to get revelations in the form of seeing an Old God, probably N’zoth, corrupt Nozdormu into Murozond as a way of starting the Infinite Dragonflight, presumably due to being heartbroken by Soridormi’s death and wanting to undo that being the catalyst. I’m still wondering what that Kairoz vision of her dying is about. My perspective of this expansion is that, when it comes to the story, it seems Blizzard is going mostly for cheap feels instead of intriguing story hooks that could make plots interesting.

All of it.

Everything.

That story arc was sacrificed for Afrasiabi’s edgelord fetish because he just had to;

  1. Give Illidan more “cool points”
  2. Villain-bat Light-related stuff

They were also supposed to be formed from the survivors of various worlds ravaged by the Legion… but no.

Other letdowns were Gunther Arcanus, Azshara and N’Zoth in BfA (could’ve done more with them), Sylvanas and the Jailer (especially the Jailer). And then there was most of the stuff in WoD.

I liked the original lore version of the army of light. It’s when Orcs and Draenei united, those two combined were supposed to be this unstoppable force. Not a fan of the one we got.

Either Warchief Vol’jin or Warchief Sylvanas. :notebook_with_decorative_cover::robot:

edit: I might need some horde opinions on which was handled worse.

Only thing I liked about any of those was that they let Azshara survive – But her personality portrayal was 10 / 10 … The rest though yeahnah they were trash. Hopefully they undo most of what Shadowlands did to the lore — Here’s hoping, eh? :beers:

The ferocity of worgen. In the intro zone they are portrayed as vicious killers, and when your character is bit it is like an oh crap moment once you see others starting to turn. Then you get the cool cinematic where Godfrey questions whether there is a shred of humanity left in you, and to return your mind to you they have to give you a special potion crafted by Krennan Aranas.

It was only temporary though so there was this air of danger like, when will it run out? When will I become a killer again? Only to have all that fear of the feral beast, the ferocity taken away by having the worgen undergo the ritual. That was a let down.

Should have had Krennan make a stronger version of his potion, to lean into the whole alchemy part of Gilnean culture, that allows you to return to human form and keep your mind. And then make that a story element for Worgen, they always need to take a potion now to keep their feral side in check.

In the WoW-lore book for the prologue of ‘Shadowlands’ – There was references made to the Shaman connecting to the spirits and sensing worry, dread and something terribly wrong.

I felt like “Finally! They’re touching back to base with the spiritual side of Shaman, and the 5th element of spirit!” — Yet pretty much everything spiritual, even the calming of spirits was shoehorned to Death Knights … Like, seriously!? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

That was just lazy as hell. Although that being said, as we all know – That was merely the tip of the iceburg to what was wrong with Shadowlands from a narrative view. lol

For the future?

Wouldn’t mind if they had Shaman play a small role (compared to druids that is, obviously) alongside the druids in the Emerald Dream patch or future Emerald Dream content, to touch base with the spirits, along with the wild gods & loa etc.

I agree. My only complaint about Azshara was that they didn’t do more with her (eg; keeping that she was working with Zul to manipulate the Zandalari).

I rather liked Zul, prior to having him as a puppet of G’huun who wasn’t even a legit old god but some fake wannabe — Which was super lame.

Would’ve been cooler lore if the lore of G’huun was stated that he was an old-god that crashed into the planet AFTER – The titanforged had been assigned / other old gods imprisoned etc, so had to quickly isolate and imprison it before it grew in size & power.

Ogmott’s Dream Journal predicted the horde would be stupid and die for sylvanas as she laughed at them and fed their bodies to the crowd.

He was kinda right.

I remember it. It was so on-the-nose most Horde players were sick with worry just speaking about it. There was no mystery to it at all, just telling the playerbase what was going to happen, like how we all knew Garrosh was going to be the villain of Pandaria from the start.

Compare it to every Old God prophecy surrounding the Alliance which is a graveyard of abandoned plots and red herrings. Despite having void-worshipers among their ranks, they seem to be immune to the contrivances of void meddling.

???

Did you not read what I said??

He was completely right.
It was Blizzard dabbing on the Horde.

I was using the word ‘kinda’ in a satire humour sense, given it’s pretty obvious he was completely right - even if it is much to many others dismay.

On the forums I feel like you’re usually pretty hostile @ me – even at times accusing falsely to throw shade … Did I like, mind control off a cliff in PvP or something? What gives, lol

I always headcanoned magathas poison that killed Cairne was part of some Forsaken plot

At the time, the Wrathion Questline in MoP made it seem like we were going to finally fight the Legion-- then WoD happened. =/

Obviously, Legion came next, but given the events of WoD, it really was a let down back then.
