Performance reviews are fine. Everyone should be evaluated fairly. This is healthy.
What is not healthy is forcing managers to give good staff low scores even though their performance metrics are great, JUST so that the staff are ranked in some way.
If everyone scores an A level percentage on a test, it is not fair to force the teacher to apply a bell curve and give the middle person a C, those below that person Ds or Fs. That DOES happen in some schools. I refused to go to a Uni that used that scale because it is not remotely fair or a reflection of student performance.
How would you feel if instead they forced the professor to apply those to a bell curve to all those high scoring inviduals and assign grades based on it. An A grade is normally assigned to scores above 90% or 93% depending on system. However, on a bell grading scheme:
The same thing applies in industry. Forcing managers to give great staff low scores simply because there are also OTHER great staff who are a fraction higher? No. Unfair, and wrong.
It does force retaliation, negative feelings, team shuffling, etc. It also impacts future jobs, promotions, professional development options, etc. The other managers just see the bell score, not realizing the person actually performing great, it is just that they were in the middle of a very high performing team.
If someone is outstanding, they should be noted as outstanding in their performance review. I don’t care if the manager has to rank them 1 through 5 under the Outstanding category, none should be ranked lower than their actual performance.
Good for the manager who walked away. He is right to take a stand against a VERY unfair industry practice.
This is not about WoW in particular, it is about ATVI, or Blizzard, trying to apply some of the worst toxic industry metrics to their company, something Blizzard did not used to do. It is a really crappy way to treat staff and not something ATVI should be copying big industry on!
They were talking about Microsoft.
Opps… I’ll delete
I keep forgetting that most folks in here have never had a job and are shocked by how jobs work, usually because they are 14.
Enron Lives!!
Say you don’t care about the quality of the game without saying you don’t care about the quality of the game.
quality of game is not the issue. fragile egos of the woke is.
I can see how this would create the problems described, but does anyone honestly believe that Blizzard is hiring only the best? Maybe the soft handed, soy drinking, purple haired freaks could use a little reality check, no?
Fellas, is it woke to have your work performance evaluated fairly?
what is fair?
I used to work for a company many many many years ago, with a similar policy. You were not allowed to give out reviews that were too good (something like 7 out of 10 was the max).
There were many reasons KB Toys eventually went belly up but almost all of them went back to bad management.
If a review rattles someone they can leave, yeah. Chaff from wheat and all that.
If you are doing quality work who cares what the man with the clipboard says.
What are you even talking about.
The manager in question is not happy because he is forced (new policy) to take a group of high performing individuals and give some of them low reviewed to fit a quota that REQUIRES some of the team to be ranked low, no matter how well they are doing.
It has nothing to do with “woke”. It has everything to do with not forcing management to give poor scores to high performing people just so that some are in the “bottom”.
If everyone earns an A, then giving some of them Ds or Fs is wrong and impacts career going onwards.
What is fair is giving them all accurate ratings based on performance, not artificial ones to force to a ranking scale. That applies to good as well as bad. Nobody bad should be artificially raised to a good level just because everyone else is also bad but slightly worse.
You do realize the man with the clipboard determines your pay and prospects of advancement in the company, right?
I guess the employee turnover wasn’t high enough.
if they’re ranked against each other, then the system is fair.
Damn…I have had issues with Brian’s dev choices. NGL about that. not gonna cover it up either.
But for this…mad respect gvien him. game choices are game choices. those are pixels at the end of the day really.
People are real poeple though. good on you dude for having your peoples back if you even come by here still.
They are not the two dudes.
They are the ‘Two Bobs’.
