Forced to get authenticator. Now I can't log in

I’ve played this game just fine for almost TWENTY YEARS without needing or wanting an authenticator

Today i wanted to start a group in the group finder only to find out that as a fully paying customer, this feature of the game is locked to me. I bought the game, I pay my monthly subscription. But this feature is locked UNLESS i add an authenticator to my account

Ok fine i say to myself, I download the authenticator app, set it up, log out of my Bnet account and prepare to log in, get back in game and start looking for people to kill a bfa world boss with.

Unfortunately the app is having issues right now and can’t authentic atm so im locked out

Guess im not playing any wow tonight GG

That feature is not locked.
You just can’t add custom text to the listing. Why is that mandatory?

Also not sure what you mean by the authenticator not working.
You said you logged back in.

Yep that is one of the feature that made me go to Classic. I’m fed up of those dumb novelties in retail.

Two-factor authentication isn’t a “dumb novelty,” it’s a very important aspect of account security that’s (thankfully) finally becoming commonplace.

If you want your account stolen be my guest, but thinking basic account security is a novelty is just foolishness.

You know what was really dumb? Blizzard storing emails as basic text that was 10 levels of dumb. Especially when it was our user names. I still haven’t forgiven blizzard for that disgusting act.

Oh great another “I don’t know how to use these dang kids pocket computers” thread.

Authenticators are good.

Authenticator in particular seem to pop up so much in these sorts of complaint threads and I wish I knew why they seemed so scary to some people

OMG BLIZZARD WILL HAVE MY PHONE NUMBER???

Looks at account already with name, address, credit card AND phone number.

Looks at the world where some chinese guy knows more about you then you do already…

Not the phone numbers!!!

Like another poster said, the authenticator is not stupid. Refusing to use one, however, is an awful idea.

Multifactor Authentication is a very important security practice that needs to be enforced more often than it is.

:beers:

Okay but it wasn’t needed for 16 years. So I don’t see the benefit of it. Except being a nuisance.

Refusing to use an authenticator is by people who
A) think vaccines will give you 5g.
B) some (not all) people over the age of 60.

No that’s not true. And I have my shots and booster. Don’t try to mix up your tin foil conspiracies with this.

We found out right quick which one this poster is.

The benefit is that your account cannot be stolen as easily. (Stolen accounts have been a problem since long before WoW, but are a particular nuisance with WoW.)

2FA ensures that someone attempting to log in to your account also has access to your device, increasing the likelihood that you are the person attempting to log in to your account.

It’s a very very minor inconvenience that, on a larger scale, can save tens of thousands of dollars, and on the scale of WoW, can save your account, your gold, and your hard-earned items.

Network security is a field that is constantly evolving in order to combat those with malicious intent.

The authenticator effectively stops someone from logging into your account even if they know your password because if you get a random notification of a login you can simply deny the access (or ignore the message, which causes it to auto-deny.)

It’s a mild inconvenience once every few months when it asks you to reauthenticate but the benefits definitely outweigh the inconvenience.

You’re a very rude person. I’m not 60 years old either.

Since you’re set on bullying I’ll be forefront. I’m asperger and most of the things you say is pretty stupid and you should feel ashamed to try bully people.

Don’t worry about it. If you look at his posting history you can see he is pretty nasty and has bullied others.

Authenticators are definitely worth it.

Oh please. You’re the one who assume I’m poor and unemployed because I debated a sub price and disagree with your of thinking and bulleted your condescending mannerism. It’s pretty funny you do come cry here about it.

Also quit assuming. You calling me “He” and literally know nothing of me. I never once gendered you.

Keep at it my lovely Karen.

I immediately just throw people who don’t understand an authenticator in the antivax/flat earth category as having a massive mismisunderstanding of how things actually work.
