Just wanted to make sure I’m not doing something wrong. I don’t recall at any point in the shadowlands intro being asked to pick a covenant. It just threw me into bastion and now I’m leveling there and was just given the bastion specific ability for my class. Never picked them, didn’t want to pick them. Is this just how the story goes until it throws me into the next area?

If this is your first character, you will go in a linear path from Bastion to Maldraxxus to Ardenweald to Revendreth. You will be given those Covenant abilities to try them out, just so you have an idea of what they feel like. Once you hit 60, you will get to choose your Covenant proper.

first time thru you quest thru all the zones and then pick your covenant at the end

No, i think you made a mistake by choosing Bastion.
It is a linear story through the 4 zones for the first time through. You don’t actually pick a covenant until you reach 60, AND finish the full campaign. You aren’t doing it wrong

Did you not pay any attention to what was happening? After bolvar describes what happened to the dudes in oribos they say that sounds like kyrian but not quite. They then suggest going to bastion to see if you can get some info and open the way.
They decided to put the zones on rails this go around so they could tell a more fluid story without having to figure out the different combinations players could approach it from.
