For Those Who Enjoy Ashran

I am not a Fan of Ashran at all, and i have commented in several threads, but i want to take an impartial approach and provide a thread for people who do enjoy this BG to comment and perhaps provide the reasons why they like it from a ranged and / or melee perspective and what classes you play and if there is a preference.

The reason I’m doing this is that through all the current threads that express the complete distaste for this BG and the reasons why, I have yet to come across any “counter” posts that would suggest there is a positive side. In fact all the “counter” posts are filled with comments like “don’t queue”. I would like to hear comments with substance that may shed light on some positive aspects, and additionally generate kind of a poll to see how many people like it vs how many dont’t.

In this thread, i would kindly ask that only people who enjoy this BG comment. I really would like the ANTI Ahsran community to refrain from commenting / criticizing those who do like it. There are enough “Hate” ashran threads to comment in. It would be great for comparison if we could get the “other side of the story” untainted by negative remarks.

Thought i give this a whirl, we’ll see how it turns out lol

Cheers!

For one ill start by saying I hate epic bgs because of the lack of individual impact. However if I were to queue epic bgs, the new ashran would be the only one id tolerate. One big long team fight could be fun every once in a while I suppose.

I like that Ashran has a mix of PvP and PvE, but the focus is on a 40v40 deathmatch similar to Tauren Mill vs. Hillsbrad. It’s the only epic BG that has sustained 40v40 combat, and because of that, there is a team-centered play style you have to learn and develop to shine with your class.

For example, as a brewmaster monk, I change my talents to optimize team utility. I’ll pick the Guided Meditation spell, which redirects every harmful spell cast to you instead of your team at a 60% damage reduction. Another fun spell is Ring of Karma. It’s great offensively and defensively.

Another example is playing a protection warrior and using dragon charge to knock people off bridges or to knock the enemy spell casters into the frontline. That way your melee have something to chomp on.

Sure you could use those abilities in any BG. But Ashran is sustained combat, allowing you to practice different strategies to learn the most effective way to help your team gain the advantage.

I like feeling like I’m part of an actual large battle as you would picture one from Warcraft history and this is one of the closest representations of it. As someone who was a massive fan of old Alterac Valley, there has been no long lasting, large scale PvP in this game for many years.

If you’re playing BGs to try to gear up, you’re mostly doing it completely wrong. I spend 15-20 min every day doing the Nazjatar quests to get pearls, which will allow you to get better armor than you’d get farming conquest points. Check my profile…I don’t run any mythics, I don’t run anything higher than LFR, and yet my Ilvl is higher than 90% of PvP only players while spending very minimal time to get there. There’s just no excuse.

Also, I do not PvP in any game for rewards. I play to fight against the opposition not only here, but in Team Fortress 2, Starcraft, Doom, or whatever PvP game you want to name. This heavy emphasis on making sure players get their little rewards these days has neutered PvP games into 10-15 minute gameshows with players more excited about a reward than actually playing the game. I’ve been PvPing online since the 90s, and I’ve seen this shift and I don’t like it a bit…but I adapt the best I can and try to find things I can enjoy. Ashran is one of the few PvP options in WoW that I can get into because it’s more old school styled.

Firstly, I thank Cicey wholeheartedly for providing this opportunity.

I agree fully with Ponkster and Beregond’s comment.

I play heal and dps in Ashran. Regardless of which I pick, I learned that utilising the environment and elements gives you great advantages, especially for a caster.

I love the fact that strategy takes center-stage in Ashran, yet this factor is so cleverly hidden that very few had noticed. Brute force your way to the boss is what you see most people do nowadays, but it is usually the toughest/longest methods. Ashran is all about out smart the opponent. This is true in the original Ashran (when its a region you can go into and leave at will without queueing, and the conflict is never-ending), and especially so now as a BG.

Ashran is a test of wills. In traditional/classic Ashran, I love the strong bond formed between members after HOURS of continuous struggles - there is no infighting, everyone shares the pains and joys, and one single goal - beat the opponent! People learn to appreciate the importance of Teamwork and each other’s role, DPS, Tank, Heal, and especially, the Lead (who has the toughest job and is mostly under-appreciated).

You also learn to respect the opponent - there are many horde players whom I still remember and regard highly, and looking forward to meet them again

Even in BG Ashran, you can still see a hint of all the above.

Problem with BG Ashran is that: it is too short and is not persistent. Most player expecting its just another Epic BG without aware of the complex nature of the game, and not enough time for field training. The only obvious path for them is the hardest method - and without a Lead, Luck then determine the chance of winning. It is not surprising for bad rep to build up quickly.

My suggestion for Blizzard would be to increase the rewards for winning the game, as well as achieving various contents in Ashran (eg bring back Events, Portals, etc) so people would have the motivation to persist through the pain to see the truth of the game.

And for new comers of BG Ashran, my suggestions are:

  • Teamwork (nothing more important)
  • No infighting! Help each other. Direct displeasure at your opponent not your teammates.
  • Get a Lead and follow/support him/her, get a Plan in place when the game start. Figure out how to get their boss with minimal effort :stuck_out_tongue:
  • If you really don’t like Ashran, Leave before it starts. But if you choose to stay, then stay till the end.

Now you have the chance to obtain victory, instead of picking up ones dropped by the opponent. Regardless, we welcome all with sincerity, if you decide to give it a try

I like WG and other Epic BG as well. However, Ashran is the only element in Wow that I truely, and still love.

Somehow I feel like all of you are the same person.

@Jdpp, lol I guess its quite common for people who enjoys Ashran to share similar feelings

However I am no where near experienced and my opinions are insignificant. I would be keen to hear more veteran sharing their thoughts/wisdoms here too.

Priest is one of the loved class in Ashran and you might like it ! Regardless which class you go for, and if you do well in Ashran, after a while people do remember your name, on your own side as well as opponents

No. Ashran is garbage until they fix the lag. Even then if you’re not a dk or ranged it sucks. You sit and wait for an enemy to be gripped or overextend or you overextend yourself to pop all every cd you have to kill something and safely make it back behind your frontlines. It’s not fun gameplay.

Just stating all of you have little to no posts on the forums that have very similar writing styles and retaining a certain level of civility in a rather uncivil place. It seems like a bunch of characters on the same account with account wide achievs turned off having a conversation with themselves.

retaining a certain level of civility in a rather uncivil place.

That’s your personal outlook on the forums. I see the forums as a way to voice our opinions in a constructive manner. Such uncivilness is a manifestation of destructive behavior.

And no, none of us are the same person.

Well, I apologize to the Ashram community for the inappropriate comments on account this thread is intended for those who like Ashran and can express there perspective without fear of ridicule.

I will reiterate to the Anti Ashran community that I have more than expressed in various threads my dislike for this BG, BUT, fair is fair, and I think more far more important than my opinion is to clearly understand both communities perspectives.

Just because I don’t like the BG doesn’t mean that the people who do are invalidated. AS a result of the posts where people expressed their sincere passion for it, even if the Polls came in and demonstrated the demand for Ashran was based on a minority community, I would like to see a compromise put in place by Blizz to accommodate both sides. I have some idea’s but will refrain from sharing in this thread because I don’t want to distract from it’s Objective, which is to get feedback from those who do like it.

I would ask again, to respect the thread and not to post ANTI Ashran comments in here, there are plenty available to do so.

Cheers!

I do like Ashran.

As someone from a wpvp guild where any 40v40 fight in the open world turns into a lagfest, Ashran is a nice change of pace and I do like the constant fighting with very few objectives other than to stomp the other faction until they have no remaining reinforcements. It’s a nice change from other epics like AV and WG where strategies are super important.

From a class perspective, I main arms, and it is nice to see all the things I can do with different talent choices. When the two big armies are facing each other, the melee are basically frontliners that poke and prod to test the strength of the other side. In this regard, with talents like defensive stance and spells like fear and bladestorm, it feels like a good place to practice wpvping.

I really enjoy healing in Ashran OLD and new. I have every healer but enjoy it on my priest mainly or druid. Ally always seems to be down on heals so I always feel needed which is nice. Its an epic battle for sure.

This is from last week. Wins and losses do not matter to me as long as I have fun.
