For The Love Of God, Fix Engineering Please!

Dragonflight Engineering is flat out broken. We are approaching the second content patch (10.0.7) and I’m still stuck at 69/100 and cannot even remember the last time I got a skill up. Unlike Leatherworking, which I leveled up with ease, there is no demand for engineering gear/equipment. Options are limited (100 possible leatherworking work order options compared to engineering’s 60).

Gear with Tinkers? Who the hell wants those? They fail as often as they work, have a ten-minute cooldown, and freaking share a cooldown with potions (you’ve got to be kidding me). Even when you do find the rare public work order, more often than not there is no skill-up associated with it and all you are doing is progressing the weekly quest for knowledge points (which usually takes two-three weeks to complete). Toys/Companions are account bound so they are a one-time deal.

About the only chance you got is profession equipment, but unless you got ahead of the curve and leveled early when there was more demand, those players who had a life are locked out since they cannot guarantee rank 5.

Blizzard has failed utterly with this profession and owes the player base a redesign. Fix Tinkers so that players actually want them and give us more options to skill up.

Pretty much in agreeance here for a few reasons… Throwing tinker on the bracer was a cool idea, Especially as a warrior. Gives you that “Iron Man breaking out of the cave” feeling. but the damage it provides, for the cooldown it has the channeling time, and the amount of malfunctions? its not worth it other than for a giggle… My clamp-defibrilators that I attached to my helmet? Those have had some clutch uses in M+, but thats pretty much it… it would be cool if the constantly used tinkers from previous generations had its malfunctioning fixed. (Looking at you, nitro belt).

But yea I got my skill ups from the gear because I leveled a hunter and a demon hunter (who were previously proffesion-less) just to use their 5 sparks for a few quick crafts… My engineer was already stacked on the rest of the mats…

I agree, somewhat.
The amount of crafting orders is a joke. I’m 97/100 and am only missing 12 recipes(looking at you tinker malfunction learned recipes) and a couple knowledge point based ones.
I have only crafted 1-2 crafting orders for others. I send my link to chat whenever im in valdraken. I can craft 415 everything, about 50-60% proc(with insight) for a 415. I even offer to craft it for free and use my own insight if i can get a skill point out of the deal.
I have spent several hundred thousand gold to get where i am. (sickening). though I’ve been an engineer since day 1 and i enjoy the profession so i’m rather used to getting the shaft financially.
The battle rez tinker is a total joke. My guild is clearing heroic easily and they dont need / want the tinker.
SAVIOR is also a complete waste, can only be activated last moment before wipe and i almost always die before i can finish the cast given im a hunter and by the time i die the boss is eating me because everyone else is dead or dying or lower on aggro table. savior should really be instant cast or a 1 second cast.

attempting to make things and sell on AH is, in almost every case, a net loss of gold. best bet is safe rockets but only sometimes.
i do the weekly kp quests, use the draconic inspiration weekly, found all the hidden trainers(why did engineering only get two when everyone else has like 5?),
I am esteemed with artisans(loads of kp from them fyi) and have gotten all or almost all of the rep based knowledge points.
my points are as follows:
optimized efficency - 35 in main , 5 in pieces, 10 in scrapper, 5 in general
explosives 5 total points(though i do want to make that iWin button lmao)
function over form- 40 in main, 35 in gear, 30 in gears for gear, 20 in utility
mech mind- 40 in main , 20 in inventions, 10 in novelties

bear in mind, i goofed my points hard and spent two weeks early on where i couldn’t learn new stuff because i was locked out by knowledge points.
I’m now at a point where i can get nothing more than the weekly knowledge points and first craft on the following: battle ready binoculars, light ocular, peripheral vision, difficult wrist, needlessly complex, and the sleeve extenders. so 6 points from items(there is more but i cant/ haven’t learned the recipes yet. I just cant get a proc off the tinker malfunctions.)

serious problems I’ve found.
reliance on a tinker malfunction at my level is really not going to happen. so try and learn those early as you can. once you hit mech mind 35 your chance of failure seems to drop substantially from that tier bonus.

Use alts with sparks to level to 100, but it wont mean much without proper knowledge allocation

You can do these with a alt. I have my bank alt put in personal work orders for all my alts doing their DF professions. For my engineers she asks for two separate orders of bolts. She actually sells those off at the AH and covers costs.

Engineering is pretty hard to level compared to other professions. A quicker but reckless option is crafting the fishing pole to yourself (to the NPC actually). Just be prepare for the bankruptcy, cause it’s really expensive.

I felt compelled to chime in here also, and I agree with the OP. I had alpha access for this expansion and I gave a lot of the same feedback way, way back then. Here’s just some bullet point comments for engineering:

The Positive:

  • Jeeves, Reeves, old wormhole generators, portable mailbox (assuming you have those things)
  • Current wormhole reduced finally to a 15 min cooldown, so thank you for that. (It was 4 hours originally, then finally reduced over and over to 30 mins, with 50% reduction with points. I pleaded to make this 15 mins during alpha).

Room for Improvement:

  • Wormhole generator, even though 15 mins, is still so RNG where it takes you many times not worth it. The ‘triangulation’ only puts you in a specific zone, not in a specific point in the zone. Dragon-flying is so good, this toy is not needed though.
  • Leveling up is not friendly. I’m stuck at 77 skill, unless I get lucky on some crafting, which largely doesn’t exist OR if I want to waste points on some explosive recipes.
  • Fireworks, really?
  • Explosives are worthless in current gameplay.
  • S.A.V.I.O.R. will kill people if they don’t know to wait to accept rez AND it’s pretty expensive to craft - 1.4k per craft for 2 on my realm. Simply make this a toy or something for engineers and remove the ability for the thing to kill people.
  • Tinker gems putting potions on CD? Really? And Breath of Nelth is a CHANNEL. No way. I will never use this.
  • The material cost for ‘Parts’ needs to be greatly reduced. Just too expensive generally to craft. Always almost cheaper to just go buy on the AH (and you can guarantee a R3 item by purchasing it on AH).
  • Failure rate to use Arclight Vital Correctors seems way to low. I would think if you are an engineer, the success rate should be higher than it currently is on live.
  • Little or no profit to be made with this profession. By and large, this has been the case over previous XPACs, but at least the utility of the profession made up for the lack of profitability of the profession.
  • Hindsight 20/20, but many recipes should have been unlocked at slightly lower renown required level to purchase.
  • Why doesn’t re-crafting have a chance for a skill-up?

Now that I was able to rank up my wrist item to R5, I have little or no use any longer for engineering. If it weren’t for jeeves, portable mailbox and other older utility items I would have dumped engineering long ago.

This is seriously the worst I have seen engineering in over 15 years. Weekly quest for enchanting? Craft two cheap enchanting rods get 3 skill points. For engineering? Spend 128 gold for vendor-only mats and another 3K in ore and whatnot and get 2 skill points.

In the dragonflight expansion, where’s my mechanical flying dragon mount? Where’s the dragon pets and trinkets that summon dragons?

It’s not FUN. It’s not FUNCTIONAL. It’s FUNDAMENTALLY broken. It SORELY needs to be reworked.

The milestone magnifiers are not 3k in mats. They’re like 300g in mats max

Spec into bombs and you can get a skill point everyday for cheap

Well, I’m glad you were able to break the code on that. I, on the other hand, decided to save Bombs for last.

Now I am stuck at 69/100 - six points from being able to unlock Bombs, I can’t remember the last time I got a skill up, I’m 1/2 on the weekly and I’m going on week four trying to complete it, and finally the only guaranteed skill ups cost a freaking Spark, cost an arm and a leg, and/or are BOP.

Nothing screams Blizzard incompetence and dysfunction more than WOW Professions - particularly, stone cold dead Engineering.

My first engineer alt managed the journey to 100 by cannibalizing sparks off leveling alts whom i sent primal chaos. Now that was costly in primal chaos. The bracers are now r5 and fairly useful.

My second engineer i use to get the toys i specced into bombs right away. The 2 daily boxes of explosives are still in the guarantee skill up range at 93, so even at yellow i will use wires. So there is hope.

Love my bomb chucking engy!

I am two crafts from max points in Engineering and it has been a painful process every step of the way. I don’t have any engineer alts so having to literally vendor ridiculously expensive items that I had to waste so many materials is just BRUTAL.

I know Engineering has always been the expensive profession with very few niche benefits that are more tailored (heh) to mild convenience but THIS time around…WHERE’S THE CONVENIENCE, BLIZZARD? WHERE?

The single most convenient thing (and, arguably, POWERFUL) is the Northrend-era rocket belt! I’m amazed it still works, to be perfectly honest. I would have thought they’d have restricted it by now to not be allowed to be applied to anything higher than original intended level of item. It also has yet to malfunction even once on me after god only knows how many uses so I’m not even going to be mad when it eventually does.

I may be more able to benefit from crafting moving forward once I finish the aforementioned couple crafts to max my skill but it’s still such a kick in the teeth that, combined with the convoluted re-imagining of the crafting system as a whole, has me totally in the camp of ‘why even bother anymore?’
