Oh man. Nobody’s talking about how we ended up with the battle cry?
Okay, kids, gather up! HISTORY TIME.
Back in the old days, everybody in the Horde agreed that our battle cry was “Lok’tar ogar! Blood and thunder! FOR THE HORDE!”
But the Alliance players? They could not agree on anything. (Because, to be fair, the RTS games had a few different battle cries for the Alliance — For the Alliance! For the Light! For Azeroth! Etc…)
A good half of them wanted “For the Alliance” because it literally mirrors “For the Horde.” The other half hated the idea of having Alliance mirroring the Horde’s battle cry.
There were legitimate arguments and fights on the forums for YEARS over the battle cry, and it got pretty pitched in… I wanna say sometime around MoP or WoD?
There was even a poll for the Alliance battle cry. (I don’t recall whether it was a Blizzard poll or just a fan poll that got lucky with its timing.)
“For the Alliance” won, and when Legion launched, Varian said exactly that on the screen, so that was it. “For the Alliance” became the official battle cry, mirroring “For the Horde.”
Personally? I think it’s a huge shame. I never liked “For the Alliance,” because I hate it when the Alliance and the Horde mirror each other, instead of having unique things for themselves.
That, and I voted for “Glory to the Alliance!”
To this day, I’ll only use the ‘Glory’ battle cry. I’ll never understand why the Alliance players DIDN’T vote for this cooler battle cry!
Oh well.
