For DK's who are choosing their Covenant for fantasy/lore/aesthetic reasons, which one is it and why?

I’m stuck between Necrolords and Venthyr at the moment. While Necrolords at first glance seems like the obvious choice, is it really closely tied enough to the DK class fantasy to justify giving up the superior Venthyr abilities? While the Venthyr are the other “edgy” Covenant, do they really fit with the DK class fantasy that deeply?

Are any of you picking Night Fae or Kyrian? I’d love to hear your reasons.

I have Four Death Knights that will be joining each of the Covenants to fully experiment them:

  • Kaeleis, the Human DK that will be Draenei for the expansion. She will be joining Venthyr Covenant as it benefits her most since she plays Blood as well as playing Frost for BoS shenanigans as well as Unholy for very versatile reasons.
  • Locutus, the Mechagnome DK. This character in the forums. He will be joining Night Fae as Locutus wants to gather as much strength as possible. Death’s Due gives strength Multiplier as well as Frost so it is most likely fitting that Locutus will be staying as a DW Frost as well since I don’t want him to give up the double multiplying Runeforges.
  • Scarlett, the Orc DK. She’s a bit of a morbid one and is THE Unholy DK. Now I assigned her to Maldraxxus because not only Maldraxxus is the most badass of the covenants, but also it fits her thematic playstyle the most. I plan to stack Mastery as well as raise as much minions as possible as Orcs make a very VERY strong Dks with very simple racials.
  • Atziri, the Goblin DK. She will be joining the Kyrians. She’s perhaps the most unorthodox one as she stacks Haste to benefit from Shackle of Unworthy but also has to compete with Kaeleis to keep BoS going. Nevertheless, playing Atziri will be most interesting as Bastion storyline is going to be also interesting after the Afterlives storyline.

Hope this will answer your question. 4 Times.

For the visual aesthetics, I actually find Blood Death Knights to fit in quite well with the Venthyr for those who want to play out that vampire fantasy. Swarming Mists and Door of Shadows along with the Blood DK kit will help me get that Gabriel Belmont Drakul look I dig. It’s unfortunate we can’t get a blood whip.

I’m factoring in the weekly event as part of my choice, so it’s a REALLY hard sell to go venthyr since the party seems dumb.

Honestly, at this moment, i’m leaning night fae since it supposedly will work with defile talent now and i really like the thought of extra movement from soulshape, plus the soul garden sounds pretty cool to me. I’d love to go kyrian too, but the covenant ability for DK really seems to suck, i wish it was at least an aoe around the target so it’d feel a bit cooler.

If I can get transmogs for all covenants I’ll probs go with Night Fae, they’re looking pretty strong atm. If they’re locked to whatever covenant you choose then I’ll be going Venthyr because the teleport is only slightly worse than Night Fae but the armor looks way better.

As someone who is entirely playing for fantasy/lore/aesthetic reasons, I have not even glanced at the abilities. I am currently debating myself which one would make the most sense.

Now obviously Necrolord makes for an obvious case. Heck I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the DK npcs we know end up there. The themes seem to just be joined hand and hand there, kind of like paladins with bastion. Not to mention the focus on strength does match well with what we do.

However I think Venthyr could also be a great option! I mean blood dks are pretty much half way there already. Plus the whole idea of atoning for your sins through suffering and becoming better is practically our motto with the whole “Suffer well” thing.

Either of them seem fun. Personally I’m thinking of going Venthyr myself, as I have another character who is going to go through the Necrolord story.

As for a Night Fae or Bastion… they do seem tough to justify as a DK. However I could see like night elves or worgan going Night Fae! Think of it as a way like despite being corrupted they seek to still preserve nature and prevent what happened to them from happening to nature. Heck doing Night Fae on my DH for that reason!

Bastion is an interesting concept. However I do feel like there is a prime example of a DK who could be there. Sir Zeliek! Whose faith in the light was so strong even as a DK he could cast light. So if someone was thinking of their character in such a way, prime idea being maybe a Draenei, they could probably get into Bastion if they wanted redemption and believed in the light enough.

Theres some ways to justify all the covenants, at least for DKs in my mind.

DK covenant is such a hard choice for me. I don’t want to pick one that sucks for Unholy but I really would rather play Venthyr or Necrolords. I don’t know dude, I wish I could just commit and not fear that I will have to play Night Fae. (shudder)

You’ll be fine. Chances are, Night Fae is gonna have a one glaring weakness and that are not you as a player, not monsters but TANKS THAT MOVE OUT OF THE BLUE CIRCLE.

LIKE WHY!?

Both Venth and Necrolords will be decent options in the expansion. For optimal play in Shadowlands, you’ll probably have to pick one covenant that you’ll like both aesthetically and a cool ability. All Covenant Abilities are good. So it’s up to you to decide wisely.

Gonna be unholy and I would love to play venthyr or necrolord. Their armor looks amazing and I love the theme behind both of them.

The night fae ability however looks like it’ll be too good to pass up. Not sure if this is still the case, but last I checked, it makes death and decay not only give 15% strength, but removes the aoe cap from it.

For m+ at least, it seems like a massive ability and it looks decent for the other 2 specs as well since it makes death and decay worth pressing.

This right here is my exact concern. So dumb.

If I can get the transmogs for all covenants I’ll go Night Fae (at this stage), if not, it’ll be Venthyr. The two mobility choices are just too good to pass up from those covenants.

I’ve never considered any other covenant than Necrolord for Vermissa. I don’t care what the ability does or doesn’t do. For the story of my character and the look I’m going for the Necrolords were just made for me.

I’m picking night fae because tbh I love fairies and the blue looks nice with my void elf. I don’t play DK seriously (yet?$) and I think it’ll be a fun choice

Venthyr because I expect death’s due, soulshape, and abomination limb (pvp) to be nerfed and I like the look of it

Necrolord to start with. Sounds like lore wise that is the most relevant one for DKs. I will assume Blizz will make it easier to change when everyone starts having a cry about the whole system post release.

The abilities to me are secondary at the start of an expansion. Plenty of time to min/max later.

I’m hoping that once you unlock the armor, it’s available account-wide and not locked to the covenant. I have one dk definitely going necrolord for the armor/aesthetics, and another dk going nf because travel form seems so good.

I badly want the contrast of a dk with bright angel wings. If there was a flying mount that was just wings I’d be 100% going kyrian regardless of the boring ability.

It’s still a tough choice overall. I’m pretty certain I will not pick the necrolords, but that’s all I can say at this point.

Considering Necrolords adn the Maw just have that Scourge/Forsaaken/DeathKnight Aesthetic. It’s totally them.
Venthyr feel more Blood Elf and Demon Huntery.

Night Fae is too broken to not use. Cant wait for my fairy wings and wood armor :stuck_out_tongue:

If I could make the choice purely off of preference, Venthyr, but that’s really just not the case, and we’ll see how it goes.

Death Knights are no strangers to blood magic, and while Maldraxus is a more obvious choice, as we’ve literally been pulling power from Maldraxus by using our abilities for the past 12 years, I like the vampire fluff, and already use a red mog and the glyph of Bloody Shield, so I’m already rocking red and purple spell effects on a red and purple mog, and Venthyr are very red and purple, so I like it.

Maldraxus is the most fitting. The Scourge have pulled energy from Maldraxus for their entire existence, and Death Knights use that same Scourge magic, which by proxy is Maldraxian magic. It makes 0 sense for DKs to have a covenant choice while Maldraxus and the current Scourge lore exists, tbh.
