For BC, would patch progression with phases be possible?

My understanding is they only had the one backup to base classic off of, and it was the patch we are currently playing.

For TBC, I think blizzard has data for multiple patches- maybe even an entire set. Would it be possible to have the patch update with the phase? So the inital TBC patch for T4/T5 (both were in the game at launch), the BT patch for when BT is added, etc?

I think it would go a long way to alleviating the problems with having nerfed content while it’s still the current phase.

I doubt they would go down that road, as it leads to having to put out each and every patch, in sequence.
You can not apply patch 2.1.0 and then try to skip to patch 2.2.1

And it is quite possible that it is not the incrementals they have backups of, but the full complete assembly, which would equate to a full download and reinstall of the client at each junction.
Probably also does not look like a pleasing option to them.

Remember, every patch or version would have to be converted individually into TBC Classic.
They are not directly usable at all on their own.

I highly imagine they will take what they feel best represent TBC as a whole and completed entity, and roll with that.

Why does that sound like such a hardship to you? It’s just copy and pasting files. The devs don’t have to dig down into the bowels of mount doom to mine patch notes or anything.

Because it is not copying and pasting files.

You do know that they can not directly use any of the original source code, not the databases, right?

Databases have to be converted because the format is totally different

Source code is only useful as a guide to recode the BFA client to operate in like fashion.

Scripting and other assets may have to be reworked to operate as intended.

And then that has to be tested to make sure it came out correctly.

It would be like a mini version of recreating TBC multiplied by how ever many patches there are.

Do you think they are eager to do all that?

It’s unlikely they’ll put that much effort in. They’re 100% going to use the modern client so they are going to have to go through and add everything into the modern client. They’ll likely be lazy and do it just like classic where everything is based on the last patch.

Yep they are absolutely going to use the BFA client.
No older client will work with the non gameplay backend things, security etc.

Classic, they only had the last rendition so options were about 0

TBC i do not know what they have, so can not speculate.
If they had a full archive, perhaps they could use the last content completion patch which i think is a little bit before the last version patch.
Dodging some nerfs would be nice, but like i said, i have no idea what they have archived.

I wouldn’t call classic lazy, simply not feasible to hand recreate what you do not have, costs too much.
And i dont think neither you nor i would have been terribly interested in buying another copy of a game we both have sitting on the shelf?

I assume that even if they do have each patch, porting each one individually to the modern wow engine would be more effort than they’re really willing to put into legacy servers.

Pretty much.
Be a tedious pain in the butt, just to arrive at a spot where the realm
is going to remain in stasis at anyways.

They are for sure going to have day 1 fixes for everything that was found to be easily exploitable, they will never let that stuff happen again.

They should use 2.4.3 Class balance/mechanics/talents.
Breaking down class changes to a patch cycle is too much work for such little gain as classes werent overhauled like they were in Vanilla.

I also support 2.4.3 Itemisation.
T4 loot got a slight bump
Season 1 loot got a slight bump
Vash/KT loot got a slight bump.
This does not invalidate SSC/TK/Season 2 gear at all.

All the raid nerfs NEED to be reverted, Else the entire TBC content can be cleared within ~3-4 months.

They should break down the game into 5 phases.

Phase 1) Kara, Gruul, Magtheridon, Season 1
Would last for 3 months.
Phase 2) SSC, TK, Season 2, Ogri’la, Skettis, Netherwing
Would last for 3 Months
Phase 3) Hyjal, Black Temple, Season 3
Would last for 2 month
Phase 4) Zul’Aman
Would last for 3 months
Phase 5) Sunwell, Season 4
Would last for 6 months

This differs from original release, but i think its a change that is required to make TBC more friendly.

no other phases needed
