Don’t really think so. That damage increase is from absorbing a Shattered Soul from a Demon. We take 10% less damage due to the ability plus get a 20% attack speed bonus, I think.
The two biggest downsides though are that we need to sacrifice damage to kill the demon and how we are constrained to a spot as a melee DPS, which is just dreadful gameplay to say the least.
well if you see carefully the video, the Shattered Soul was from the demon summoned by Fodder to the flame
so i’m almost sure it’s a 20% damage increase from it.
There is a passive DHs have that when they consume a demon soul they gain a 20% bonus damage increase and it’s the red icon on a 15s duration. What he/she show us is a 10% damage reduction and a 20% attack speed bonus.
Now, I gotta say this: WHAT THE FREAKING HELL??? Look at the size of that pool!!! It’s minuscule!! How does someone even expect THAT to work for a melee DPS? This covenant ability is complete trash.
So, it took him 5 globals to kill it, and that pool is only ~5yd across, barely the size of the original prebuff Rune. The pool is spawned at 1:00 and disappears at 1:30, so it’s either a 30s duration, or it disappears when you get >10yds from it, since he ran away from it at that same point.
So basically, we sacrifice 5 GCDs of damage, and in exchange get 20% attack speed for 30s and 20% damage for 15s, provided we remain within a tiny little 5yd circle.
I’m about 90% sure that’s actually a net DPS loss, unless you can passively cleave down the demon without lifting off the boss. And regardless, there’s zero chance it competes with Sinful Brand.
I wish he’d used it outside of Torhast, and outside of combat, so we could see how much damage the demon deals. It looks like it’s dealing about 350 damage, which is about 3.5% of his HP per attack, with around a 2s swing timer, so that isn’t terribly significant. At least it wouldn’t be much of a problem to tank the thing for a bit.
But ya, this thing just has too many drawbacks. Tiny circle, short duration, long cooldown, requires lifting off the boss and/or tanking the demon for a bit, and all for absolutely pitiful benefits. And to top it off, it’s a 20% attack speed bonus, not haste, which means it’s flat out useless for non-Demon-Blades builds.
It is only useable in Torghast for now because Blizzard is rotating Covenant Abilities for people to test them while in there even though most Covenant areas are not available as of yet.
Ok, that’s fair. He could still have used it out of combat.
This seems miserably constraining and complicated to be the covenant ability we use for a whole expansion. I wish this weren’t the case.
I suspect it will get another overhaul, I can’t see the current iteration going live.
Yep, my worst fears.
Tiny pool.
Gotta hit demon thus lose dps.
It does seem to last 30 seconds which is reasonable, but the second your target moves…
It’s a waste of a button.
It kind of baffles to see this iteration even be considered though. The pool is so minuscule that it makes even Rune of Power look good.
Well they do sometimes push out iterations that they already know they are going to change but it was what they had in the latest build. So hopefully its like that?
Hopefully.
I mean, the fact that not one but multiple people looked at that iteration and said “ya, that could work”, enough of them to have it progress all the way through from design to implementation to QA to build, and not one of them thought to ask “is this even a DPS gain”, or “would anyone, literally anyone, ever take this steaming pile of excrement”, that’s actually really telling of their design and development process these days.
Ya, sure, sometimes implementations that look reasonable on paper just don’t flesh out in reality. But even on paper, literally everything about this ability is pure unadulterated garbage.
Man, even if the demon itself was not a factor it would still suck major butt. Even if it just straight out spawned a demon soul by our side and the pool under our feet, it would still be terrible. They even reduced the cooldown from 3min to 2min, which means they are trying to push this horrible design.
Maybe there could be an achievement if by some twist of fate you either manage to keep the demon alive for longer than thirty seconds or if it actually succeeds in killing you.
Does it despawn if you don’t kill it in a certain window? What if you keep it alive until the cooldown is up? Could you then summon another demon, in which case, would the buffs stack?
I get that they wanted to try something different, and that’s awesome. But this is the major on use ability for one of four choices that theoretically will last a whole expansion. It needs to be more straightforward.
I would cry with joy if they just gave us Fury of the Illidari back under a different name.
How 'bout we make an achievement simply for selecting the covenant in the first place. Call it “masochist” or “terribad”, since one of those two applies for anyone that takes it in its current state.
I fear that I’ve been letting my frustration get the better of me in my posts lately, especially about this ability, I think because thematically I was looking forward to the Necrolords for my DH. I want to try to be constructive. I just don’t like this design though.
What if the demon spawns somewhere we can’t reach or gets snapped somewhere it evades? What happens when we cast the ability but then get mind controlled or CC’ed while the demon is present? Will the demon break a freeze or fear?
Does any other spec in the game have an ability that actually requires its other abilities to be used for several GCDs to manage it? How much flavor will this really have later in the expansion when we can presumably one shot the demon, or does its health scale? Will the version that spawns for VDH have a smaller HP pool to account for lower tank DPS?
From a roleplay flavor standpoint, how much sense does it make at the climax of a battle for any character to decide to summon another monster to fight down?
Here’s an idea: give us an ability called Bonescythes. It spawns a whirling set of bonescythes for four seconds that increase Parry by 30% while the DH is standing in it and does some amount of damage over four seconds to every enemy inside. 2 minute cooldown. Boom! Done.
Oh man, I’ve definitely regressed into caustic sarcasm. I’m not sure I even care. The current implementation is frankly an insult. The fact that the devs actually think something like this is workable shows just how far they’ve fallen. It shows how terrifyingly incompetent or utterly apathetic they are about their game design these days. This thing should have been spotted a mile off, and when the first version turned out to be flat out useless, they should have recognized that the ability is fundamentally flawed. Instead, they literally made it worse by tacking a Rune mechanic onto a melee class.
I just…there’s nothing constructive I can say. This ability needs to be deleted, and they need to start over from scratch, because Fodder isn’t even remotely salvageable.
Numbers aside, this ability doesn’t seem too great. You have to target the demon, kill it (doesn’t matter how fast tbh) and then stay within a pool to get its benefit… If there was ever a good time to use this word, it’s now… this is really “clunky”.
