Focus on class or spec?

Going into tww I am left wondering if it’s better to pick a main based on the class or the spec.

Personally, I am having trouble deciding on a main. And I think that one of the biggest problems I’m running into is the belief that you should never main a class unless you like at least two of their specs.

This has always drastically limited my choices.

Do you guys think that it is important to always have a ‘backup’ spec for your main? Or should you risk it, for the chance to play something you really enjoy?

I personally don’t think a “backup” spec is needed, but a lot of my characters I enjoy I enjoy 2 of their specs.
Like Paladin I have fun with all 3 specs, Shaman for Elemental and Restro, but some I enjoy them for that spec, like Warlock with Demonology.

But I would say your best bet for picking a main is to figure out which character you enjoy playing the most.

And as always if you need to, try new things to see which class/spec you enjoy the most.

Ty for the answer.

My fear is that I pick a class where I only enjoy the one spec, and that spec becomes (D tier).

You main spec, few classes can respec and be the same role.

I don’t do mythic dungeons (or even really normal raids) to often so I don’t know the impact of a “D tier” class spec, but I feel like in general you can do just fine because you enjoy a class and spec.

So unless you want to do hard content you shouldn’t have to worry about how “good” a class or spec is.

That’s the thing, they will nerf some classes in S1, or S2, or S3. Some people prefer to stay on one class or switch to buffed classes.

It’s your call.

IMO
this only matters if you let other people decide what you should play.

It’s rare for a class to be truly D tier. Which for the most part is a community perception, but it can affect the groups you can easily get into.

I am so used to having an off tank or healing spec that the idea of going into the expansion without one, is causing me to second guess my decisions.

This factors into my decision on what to main. I don’t always have time to keep an alt geared up, so I like being able to choose a second spec to keep things fresh, without having to sink extra time into leveling/gearing again.

The m+ changes in TWW are going to make keeping up an alt pretty tedious, so my recommendation would be to stay the course and find a class that you enjoy at least 2 specs on.

I’ve always been a class over spec kind of person. Certainly would not main a class if i don’t at least like 2 of its spec.

Yeah, that’s probably for the best. It does make life easier when you go into an expansion with more than one choice.

And you never know what they will buff and nerf.

ty for the replies

Personally, i always try to have 2 specs up to date. ( talents spent, action bars oganized etc.)

I love playing my Prot Pally but ill switch to Ret sometimes for fun.
what i dont like is when someone wants me to play something completely different.

“Hey dude wanna join us for some dungeon runs? We could use a tank”
“Sure ill join on my prot pally”
“…um… Prt Pally isnt the greatest right now… do you have a DK or a DH you could use?”
“No, not really but its cool. Next time maybe” … maybe not…

You would think people would just be happy to have a tank. Especially one that they were somewhat friends with.

I think most people don’t care what class you play, especially among friends/guildies. If they do, and they aren’t doing bleeding-edge content, they’re dumb.

Don’t over think it.

It’s a video game.

Play what you find the most fun.

I am only playing for my one spec right now. Feral.

In the past I would learn all of the specs of a class but nearly every single time I’d be sort of stuck playing a tank or a healer for some group of friends or guild lol. It almost always happens. Since Legion actually.

So I’m making myself not get too involved in any raiding or anything this time. I want to dps!

Play what I want this time. And I think that’s the best way to be. Don’t worry about making a spot for yourself by playing something else. I think it almost burned me out.

True. It’s a bit hard to not overthink things though when you want to go into the new expansion feeling good.

This is my problem rn…. I love balance but resto was always dubious and now that resto lost moonkin form … idk. I never liked catweaving but maybe in the next expac dpsing as a heal isn’t that big of a deal… :man_shrugging: :cloud_with_rain:

Always choose based on specialization.

It’s a bonus if you like more than 1 from the same Class, but in any other game our Specializations would be separate Classes. They all play completely differently; you just share a handful of abilities with some others.

Choose what to play based on how it plays now and switch to something else if that changes.
