Flying is really bad for the game

inb4 “another anti-flying thread”

Look, I was a pro-flyer and very anti anti-flyer for a long time, expansions long even, but being able to fly really just trivializes content that’s already brain dead easy to plow through.

It took me being able to unlock flying with everyone else to see that this expansion. With flying unlocked I just parachute in with everyone else and once we’re done, it’s like bye, see you never despite this being an MMO. Surely people can’t honestly like that or at least see this is bad long-term? Do people not see this is part of the reason why the community is often considered toxic? Yeah Nazwhatever is/was miserable on a ground mount, but in Mechagon my server at least used to do call outs often and help one another. Even if in the latter we were incentivized by needing the same quest items.

It’s just really shocking to see all these threads about how PF should be easier despite it only taking 2 weeks max, if you did the dailies everyday. The long wait was bad for flying in itself, yeah. But flying shouldn’t even be in the game to begin with at this point.

FOR THE RECORD. I used to always love to point out that wow was most successful when it had zones specifically designed for flying, like Icecrown and Storm Peaks in Wrath. But now? Flying is mostly for people who hate playing or cooperating with others, but I don’t think that’s because that’s the way we enjoy playing but rather the way we’ve been conditioned to play. I totally empathize with people who like the scenery that comes with being able to fly and those who only have very few hours to play and so being able to fly is important for doing what they want to do in-game. I’m just saying flying in the long-term seems extremely bad long-term.

It trivializes nothing when you are bringing your fourth or fifth alt through already completed content you have seen, just as the devs intended.

So when you killed objectives while riding in on a ground mount, you stayed after the kill and struck up engaging conversations with the other players? Exchanged information? Adventured together afterwards? :face_with_monocle:

Its these bits of misinformation that makes this whole conversation murky.

To be clear the poster quoted is only talking about themselves and no one else because they don’t know this about anyone else.

It seems to be presented as a fact but it is instead just a projection of the poster’s own feelings.

Or maybe its not, which makes me wonder what they might even be talking about.

But as a good rule of thumb, whenever anyone shares a stunning revelation about what everyone else thinks or believes, they are really just talking about themselves.

the more you knoooooowwww

Ride up on horse, kill, ride off in different direction than you, and never see you again.

What’s your point, exactly?

Still doing same objectives just not waiding through 50 crabs/naga to get it done.

Are you honestly using Mechagon as your example of how flight trivializes content? The tiny little island that was designed to have people float around on anti-gravity backpacks even before flight was unlocked?

Flight makes the world larger, not smaller, and for me, it vastly improves my game experience.

What does entering and exiting have to do with it being an mmo? Should we befriend the naga or crabs and buy them a coffee first?

For you maybe. You’ve the right to your feelings and i’ve the right to mine.
Which is…i like it.

Since dropping right on top of the mob you need is so much worse than having a rogue run up to the mob they need, killing it then vanishing to let you deal with the 40 or so mobs they drug with them.

As a rogue you shouldn’t be able to stealth passed any mobs, it trivializes the world and eliminates all threat from it.

The very reason I lvled my Druid first.

Rate of play is far less important than actually having something important to play. A non-living overworld is a consequence of blizzard continuously creating secluded playpens for the newest levels. Further isolating the invested players from the whole community. Cataclysm for all its faults and too soon of a revamp was at least grounded in something sensible.

Tl;dr forcing people on ground mounts in dead world is bad and in fact worse cause it you have to slog through bad/dead content at a slower pace.

And that’s not even counting the over a decade of blizzard making a vast majority of their zones having flying in mind. To remove flying while having that level design will instead force people to endure nazjatar-style zone design until blizzard unlearns those design habits. Also I will never understand why people willingly want to do something slower.

Flying is one of the best features of wow. If you still want to experience content from the ground I can assure you that your ground mounts aren’t broken and you can still use them.

Flying was great for the game until some smart person decided to remove it and make you chase that bright orange carrot to get it back, twice per xpac.

These replies are insane, but some comical.

That’s a “the world is boring and trivial” problem not a “we need flying” problem.

No. Did you?

See above.

This is probably my favorite reply because it has nothing to do with my class.

I can’t help but wonder, are these few anti-flying people just forum trolls? Or do they legit think flying is bad? I feel like it’s objectively wrong to be against flight.

Occasionally? Yes. Doesn’t happen often, but it only takes one comment to start a conversation. Once everyone gets flying and engages tunnel mode, it is less likely to happen at all. As soon as the mob dies, there is an explosion of wings and sparkles and everybody is gone.

No it’s not.

Well, you are free to be wrong.
