Floating Necropolises

I can’t seem to find any info in lore about it so I’m asking here. How long would the various kinds of floating necropolises take to construct?

Most were already constructed by the Nerubians that the scourge took over following the War of the Spider. The Scourge then lifted them up into the air. So it is hard to grasp. We do see a few new ones (saronite base) being constructed in Icecrown and in the Halls of Reflection dungeon. The former we sabotage and the latter we don’t know about. It is possible that the one in the dungeon is the same one in the outside zone. Given the time difference between the two events.

90 seconds.

But for a more serious answer we simply don’t know. We can only guestimate based on Malykriss which was being built to replace Acherus, so it can’t have started construction prior to the Ebon Blade breaking free, and they’ve only gotten a bare minimum done by the time we sabotage the construction efforts.

It took years to build medieval castles and cathedrals, so it would be reasonable to assume a similar time frame for floating cities. Magical aide might speed it up but would also be a basic requirement to ensure its stability and operational capabilities.

Just look at what the Arathi survivors were able to do in Hallowfall in like 15 years. I’m glad the emperor had the foresight to send their best stonemasons and a mountain of lumber with the expedition.

The Scourge has the benefit of a vast and tireless undead labor force (including various undead giants who can quickly haul around large equipment and materials) that never need to stop for food or rest, so it may be able to construct such things far more rapidly than living people in-universe or IRL.

This is forbidden knowledge that few undead are privy to, layperson.

Move along now, nothing to see here.

This was something me and my friends started to joke too around once we started to think on the lore in Hollowfall.

I don’t think its ever been stated… but like mention, if built by undead giants and other custom made undead control and supervise by the dedicated steady tireless hand of Powerful Necromancers or Liches it could be completed in incredible supernatural speed. Also added the magic aspect and who knows…

Since Shadow Lands I myself started to wonder if most or all the materials use by the Scorge Flying Necropolis were not built but Summon from Maldraxxus or deals with the Brokers by Necromancers or Liches… since the Jailer had such far reaching connections to it all.
However there is also the influence of the Nerubians… but then what of the Maldraxxi similar structures? Was it the Ancient dead Nerubians influence in the Shadow Lands that lead to the creation of the Maldraxxus Ziggurats or were the Ancient Nerubians influence by the Shadow Lands at some point seeing they being so familiar with Shadow magic and shadow school being sooooo vast that it could come from Death, the Void, even form Light as Twilight or Life (Blood Magic is Tortured life magic so if the wiki is right, then that explains theoretically the Emerald Nightmare Redish color and even Venthir reddish tint of their anima seeing that it’s suck off in a form of what looks like a torture ritual) and who knows how many variants of other shadow magics exist, derive from other Cosmic sources and Elemental forces like Shadowflame, Shadow Arcane or Shadowfrost… beyond what we are familiar or know.

Sadly such secrets have not been revealed to us puny mortals… lol

But if I had to guess I think it’s a mix of part built, part summoning and part magic connected directly to the Shadowlands, maybe? So it should not take too long if assisted by tireless drones and magic or summoning rituals, theoretically of course.

Everyone knows that Necropoli float from the thousands upon thousands of bound invisible ghosts holding it up in the air.

I don’t think I ever read it or heard it being said (Or I forgot lol), but I genuinely believe those huge crystal the Scourge, Malfdraxxus and the zigurrats use are bound spirits of some sort or big batteries of Death/Shadow energy or could be both and also gatherors of residual ambient energy!

So you might be right… lol Especially for the Scourge I can totally see they using their victims spirit for that while their soulless corpses being control as undead soldiers/workers.
I say the undead factions are very practical and leave nothing to wastes with their resources! lol
