It was changed some time ago, because many complained that it was too loud. But instead of simply turning the sound down, or allowing people to keep their sounds folder to replace the sound, they instead changed it to what I consider “kid friendly.” It is quite strange to me that they did this.
I didn’t know I wasn’t the only one really bothered by this.
I tried Amazon’s MMO recently. Even though I was underwhelmed by the game, the sound is amazing. Specifically, the guns. They really put the boom in boomstick.
You can even hear the reverb from it outside of immediate vicinity. It’s amazing how much immersion the sound design adds to a game.
It doesn’t need to be loud. It just needs to carry more umph.
Same with Monk punches. They sound like little slaps right now. Add some Diablo 3 punch sounds and Monk’s would just feel more powerful because they’d sound powerful.
This is absolutely it. Barrage with a gun used to be a little like booting up either of the Sonic Adventure games in terms of “OH JESUS MY EARS.”
Now, it wasn’t as loud as either of the Sonic Adventure games, mind you, but it was frequent enough that I’m pretty sure there were guilds with a “NO GUNS ALLOWED” rule on raid night. With sound replacement being a nebulous thing that not everyone knew they could do at the time, Blizz probably opted to just change it, instead of changing the sound Barrage makes.
It sure was hell of alot of fun… that repeated rapid fire sound of a baseball bat against a metal trashcan xD the tank in my guild at the time use to always complain. lol!
I intentionally sought out the silenced rifle as a result, as I still wanted a gun for my transmog, but for the sake and sanity of my guildies, I got that weapon…
That’s another thing that made me sad when they changed the gun sound to being quiet… it made the purpose and reason for unique guns such as the Silenced Rifle or the Sonic Pulse Generator and their silenced (lack of) gunfire sounds 100% pointless.
