One thing that Classic and Retail could really use is abolishing the unique name system. Person one should be able to roll Jack#1235, while person two rolls Jack#1928. The hash tag shouldn’t be typically visible, but everyone can have the name they want and be happy. Merging realms becomes much less of a worry. Don’t even need realm names attached to character names for disambiguity then. I have tons of names reserved so I can use them later, and I can imagine that most “good” names are just that, sitting on reserve by people.
Might make sending mail/whispers/invites more difficult? I don’t imagine that there would be typically more than one unique name on a realm online at a given time, unless it’s a super common one, but I’d still take hash tags over alt codes anyday.
Please no. It’s fine for discord and bnet usernames, but this should never make its way in any game. The ToonName-RealmName thing we have for retail is already bad enough.
I’m squatting on names like Jack and Chris on the RP realm and may never play them. My friend was really upset when they couldn’t use the name they wanted either.
A little bit of UI work helps that out a lot.
/tar already allows partial matches, and it’d be easier if alt codes weren’t ever necessary.
Sending mail you have the same problem with alt codes, but naturally can be easier by autocompleting for friends list etc.
Whispers same thing… if you want it to be easier to find someone, add as a friend. That, and there likely won’t even be two people online with the same name.
If one is really adverse to numbers, they could replace them with unique words. Just like realm names but not realms and easy to type. Above all though the game would avoid showing anything like that in typical situations, and only need them for disambiguation.
