Tanking used to be enjoyable. Oldschool paladins are the core and correct design for a tank class. Modern tanking, is not. Granted, all the classes got massively stripped/dumbed down for WoD, but tanking is now just spamming a single ability til the end of time.
My ‘fond’ memory was gliding my way to an infinite falling loop because their ‘you fell through to the death plane’ mechanic was to teleport you to the last location your character had solid footing – which in my case immediately dropped me into the death plane again.
It took them NINE DAYS to get my character moved so I could play him again.
Exaggerations and hyperbole aside, this is only going to increase the problem not solve it. By making all DPS specs into higher threat, higher damage, higher damage reduction tanks than actual tanks then the need for actual tanks is greatly reduced in the Queues.
Less tanks getting geared, less tanks actively playing, groups viewing real tanks as a disadvantage. I feel like this is a band aid fix that would just result in a deeper infection in terms of issues at large.
I actually made a post on the topic of tank scarcity a while back and what I perceive the real issues are and why (aside from the obvious fact that you only need 2 in raids no matter the scale and 1 in all other content so they are naturally in less demand, and don’t even get me started about Island Expeditions or PvP) that tanks have such issues and are so scarce in the general setting.
As silly as it sounds, that addon that shows you an efficient route to take through an instance as a tank could help this a lot. I was always a pretty good tank when I chose to, but in the last few xpacs I’ve been ranged which is basically lazy mode in terms of just following the group. If there was a guide on where to go so I didn’t look like an idiot, I might tank more.
It would save those of us who have the skills, but not the time to know EVERY single thing about an instance, the embarrassment of saying “I don’t know where to go” in chat. I know some people hate the idea of an addon like this, but it could help.
I don’t really agree with this, to be honest. There was some novelty to being unhittable, but it wasn’t fun to play. The gameplay was all in positioning and threat management – keeping yourself alive wasn’t even remotely a challenge.
It’s still easy to keep yourself alive, but at least now I have to actually engage my brain to an extent instead of just stacking stats until I reach a soft cap, cast Consecration and then just AFK.
Again, this should be looked at more as an overall role change across the board. There wouldn’t necessarily be a DPS or Tank spec. Most tanks already do (ridiculously) high damage, so it wouldn’t even need re-balancing.
It would be more of a “fun” choice: “Do I want to hit things with a big sword, or throw my shield at them” + “Do I want to tank or DPS this run”
In Legion, this was a lot more viable already, because of class weapons, but now those don’t exist and azerite perks lock you down. If I wanted to change from healing to tanking in Legion, I very easily could, mid dungeon/raid, and often did. That’s not really viable anymore.
If they wanted to really get into it, they could do some crazy flipflop mechanics, sorta like disc priest. Where any class can play as healer - they have all their regular abilities/rotation, but instead of dealing damage, they target allies to heal. And the reverse for healers. But that would require some actual effort, and this is BFA, so I just proposed the ezpz bandaid fix.
I didn’t even notice this comment the first time through – but no, no it is not. This is either you being extremely hyperbolic, or demonstrating that you don’t know how any classes actually tank in the current game.
I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a tank actually accepting when they messed up. And I’m not speaking as a mage here, I’m speaking as someone that has been a healer main for years besides playing a mage.
But OP, I get it, sometimes you just want to dps. But if that’s what you want, handle the consequences of it. Tanks have to deal with dps pulling ahead, healers have to deal with people expecting them to outheal stupid… and dps have to deal with being dime a dozen.
Yeah, you might lose a whole 3 overall ilvl from switching to your offspec pieces, if you don’t have a second same-ilvl piece for any of the slots. Totally nonviable.
Despite its reputation Legion was one of the most offspec friendly expansions in history, but with the necklace working for all specs and no need to split your AP, BFA is even more offspec friendly in anything but literally Cutting Edge content, or maybe extremely high keystones.
Of course that doesn’t do anything to stop “Ret, Feral, WW LF tank and healer then GTG” – because that’s never been about game systems anyway. Some people just want to hit things and have no responsibilities, and your suggestion won’t do anything about this.
Offspec friendly is the last thing legion and BFA has been, with one requiring a leveled up artifact and the other needing different Azerites (or increasing amounts to reforge)
Tanks are still rushing thru mindlessly like they did for those essence runs in Legion.
I agree tanks SHOULD be able to hold threat better. BUT…they absolutely should have to ACTIVELY be doing something to hold it.
So, yeah, increase tank threat…WHEN they are actively trying to get and keep threat. If they get it and keep running then threat is lost within a second or two.
I see too many times where a tank is trying to get and hold it, but threat seems to be a mythical chalice that cannot be found.
And for the tanks who can manage to get aggro, they just end up running thru the dungeon like an escaped prisoner making it so it just takes longer to do the run and makes a far greater risk of deaths and wipes.
What they need to do is make it so the tank can easily get aggro pretty easily, but its something he has to keep working at.
So he’s 100% of the threat IF hes actively trying to keep it.
If he runs out of a certain range of whatever hes trying to aggro, threat is immediately lost and the crap goes after the healer or DPS within its range if its closer.
I hated legion later on because you could sneeze and get / hold aggro and all it did was teach tanks bad habits and poor strategy.
