There is too much secrecy and confusion about layering, constantly. sometimes it works in the strangest ways possible, it really needs to change, or at least be made consistent

Agreed. We understand that Blizzard wants to make the server balanced, but it’s just not balanced. When people are questing, some of us still will get ganked by 10 horde, being alone. On the other hand, when we form a group, we cant fight Horde? This doesnt maek sense

agreed. nothing is more fun then a big battle with a Guild you enjoy being in.

Well said, the layering system is ruining the massive world pvp events we love to take part in on a weekly basis. It’s, for me, the biggest reason I choose to play this game over others. Please consider revamping the layering system or making it more intuitive so we can continue to have these huge world pvp events.

Best way would be a soft cap/hard cap population per layer.
Ex Soft cap of 1,500 per layer with hard cap of 3,000 keeps each layer within the “Vanilla server population” range.

What is a soft cap?
A new layer is created when the soft cap is reached.
What is a hard cap?
The max amount of players that can be on a given layer at all if different from the soft cap.

I figured if the soft cap was 1,500/2,000 it’d let people invite mutliple raids to one layer for a big PVP event.

What I said about layers, more or less, on a Reddit post.

Ever since I returned to WoW, I have noticed layering being an issue in multiple ways.

Someone can be asking in general chat for help, but no one on their layer is interested. There could be 6 other layers where 2-3 people are interested and could connect in this MMO, but layering removes their opportunity to connect. General chats are thus more dead than they should be and people don’t generally use LFG for questing.

You can EASILY change layers to avoid getting ganked or camped. Even in the middle of a fight. nothing is easier than having a friend invite you to their party to get out of a tough situation, reducing the usage of Local Defense and player interaction, incentives to get help, etc… It rewards people with friends heavily and especially with on-demand voice chat.

I can’t count how many times I’ve walked through a city or zone to see hardly any people around, despite the enormous population, hype, and /who showing 50+. The irony is that on high population servers, where people should be interacting a lot, there is a higher likelihood of experiencing deadness in the world itself, and nothing could be more damaging to an MMO than that impression, which I have witnessed many times with people being confused at how dead the world seems.

A good example is in SoD, when it was super hyped for the first few phases. I was in Ashenvale with a big raid doing the event, and we were so very close to winning, before suddenly our entire raid changed into layer where we were about to lose and the Alliance population was essentially dead. Running around the world at times, it would feel like I was playing No Man’s Sky with the rarity of seeing other players, despite every zone showing 50+.

On Retail, I’m not sure how they do it, but people can engage in PvP while not in War Mode, like if they attack me because I’m personally flagged, and then they just disappear and re-appear no longer flagged. I think they are doing something with layers but I can’t confirm at the moment.

TLDR I really hate layers… My long-term friend who used to play with me has extreme reluctance to re-sub because she hates them too, as we played for interactions in the world and have shared many memories of starting PvP wars since vanilla/TBC or defending people from gankers for fun, and the layering has damaged this aspect of WoW considerably.

The layering system also completely curbed our warcraft event in Hillsbrad, November 30th. What was supposed to be a huge guild clash ended up lumping Horde on one layer and Alliance on another, essentially… Very anti-climactic. I had a much better experience in 2004-2005 raiding Crossroads & Orgrimmar with multiple raid groups than I do in 2024…

i went back to SoD because of this lame new “layer/shard” system.

layers is the worst thing ever happened in wow classic, it divided the world into many worlds.

it really destroys the world pvp when people transfer to another layer any moment they wish for, also it allow bots/farmers to loot the rare herb & mine then switch to another layer to loot it again.

Yeah it gives it a divided feel
