With the new fishing hat you can get from a tailor, the fishing journal should have a fishing garment spot just like it does for your rod.

I think the reason is that the bonuses from crafting tools only apply to Dragonflight crafting, but the fishing bonus is applicable to any fishing anywhere and will continue to work in future expansions. I had wondered why they didn’t make the existing fishing hats & boots be crafting tools, but now that I understand the tools a bit better I think maybe we’re better off this way.

Except the bonuses from old rods work. They should let you use the fishing gear as well.

They do let you use your fishing gear. There are a couple things that are bugged, like Nat’s hat, but they mostly work the way they always have.

it is rather bizarre fishing only has one slot - makes all that crafted equipment useless for long term fishing people.

I agree. Particularly because a fishing cap is one of the “Profession Garments” that tailors can make this expansion. Every other item in this category can be equipped in a profession slot, including the “Master’s Wildercloth Chef’s Hat” which gives +4 cooking skill.
