Fishing etiquette - sharing pools?

Long ago (back in vanilla days), I had heard/read that it is considered rude to start fishing in a pool if someone is already there. Is this still the case, or is that antiquated thinking?

Just going to echo Chaaka here: definitely rude, and it’s happening more in DF than it usually does judging by my and my husband’s experiences lately. But hey, it’s the age of no manners, in game and out, so there it is.

You’re name aint on it, and theres fish to be taken.
As the old addict goes sharing is caring

I feel like it should be considered rude, but I’ve literally never seen someone keep moving on when I’m fishing a pool, so I’ve done it myself a few times at this point because I’ve just assumed I was an outlier.

Given that most pools only have 3-4 fish anyway, it feels rude as heck to just drop in and start fishing a pool someone else is working on. You get what, one cast and screw over someone else at the same time? Sheesh. Easier to just find your own pool and reap all the benefits from it.

Or maybe I’m just really weird to give and expect courtesy from other players even after all these years.

Bad enough we have to spend untold amounts of time in rare pools (lava/prismatic leaper/ice) to get the stuff to upgrade our fishing gear, without fighting interlopers as well.

IMO, the only pools it’s not rude to multi-fish from are the ice holes, since they work differently.

I think it’s rude. If I see someone already at a pool I keep moving.

It’s less rude in DF imo since the fish are not as rare.

Adage, not addict.

It is always more efficient for you to find another fishing pool as it would require less travel time and more time spent fishing. It is a mutual benefit to not share a fishing pool.

This is the key thing. Most “that’s rude” traditions stem from people observing behaviour that is lose-lose - bad for both parties - and rather than going through the complicated effort of explaining why, just saying “that’s rude, don’t do it”.

Stopping to share a pool someone else is using means both of you will get fewer fish per stop/dismount/remount/travel time. It’s dumb and bad for both of you. Hence, rude.

Which unfortunately, so many things in game (and in life) are viewed as lose-lose despite absolutely not being the case. All because people can’t see benefits beyond what is immediately in front of them.

100% rude.

Unless you’re in a competition (which unless I’m mistaken, we don’t even have anymore), it’s troll level rudeness to do that. It’s tantamount to jumping up and down on someone’s bobber which stopped being funny mid-Vanilla.

That said, it’s fun when people group up at ice fishing holes because no one is losing out on fish. That makes it far more appropriate for group activity.

If you’re in the tuskar fishing area that has literally 20+ pools up at once? uber rude.

Exception of course is the rare fish, the Islefin Dorado. That’s fair game.

why are you using fishing holes? just fish anywhere … its way faster

Blame blizzard making key Tuskarr fishing upgrades super rare and only drop from a few rare fishing holes. This makes people trying to get all the components fight for the few relevant holes to try and progress fishing.

Curious what even are the benefits of fully upgrading your spear anyways?

Less likely to break the rope.

However the real value of these items are improving your nets to get more/better fish from the net setting.

I would say its rude in general, except with the rare pools. Each zone has set spawn points on those pools (roughly 3 in each zone), and people periodically camp them. If there were more spawns I wouldnt mind leaving the first arrival alone. Its a little infuriating that those rare pools are so difficult to come across, and just about the only way to get the items necessary for the fishing upgrades.

And if anyone if on a high pop realm you know you run across a bunch of other people fishing those pools constantly.

It is very rude IMO. I always emote scowl at people who start fishing from a pool I was at first. The overheated magma thresher pools contain the items needed to fully upgrade the Tuskarr spear and net and they have an incredibly low drop rate so it’s frustrating when someone comes along and essentially takes away multiple chances at the loot. Did you just fish in the lava pools consistently for 30 minutes to try and get the overheated pool to spawn? No? Then you shouldn’t have claim to the one that I force spawned.
