First they said sharding only in starting zones

Now it’s layering? What’s going on, why is this even a thing? Was layering just a beta compromise to influx of players? Please tell me this won’t go live.

It will be live and try the search feature champ.

When did they ever say sharding will be just in starting areas? I remember them saying it will help the starting areas, but never specifically stated “only in starting areas”

Oh look, the sky is falling and classic WILL fail!

It will go live. It will mainly be present at launch, when all the player base is crammed into a few zones. It should be out of the game by Phase 2 if not sooner.

Sharding and Layering are similar tech but opposite. While sharding pops players into a zone trying to populate the zone, layering keeps players separate in order to reduce the population in a zone.

Sharding pulls players from multiple servers into a single zone, seemingly random, just to keep population up.

Layering takes players from a single server and distributes them across multiple layers of a zone, never combining from different servers.

The goal of layering is two fold:

  • reduce the congestion of launch weeks
  • increase the population on a server

The second goal exist because they expect population fall off over time, probably within the first couple months. If they can stack players on a server well above server cap, then even with population drop it won’t drop so low that it is a dead server.

Layering is trying to solve the problem of low pop dead servers, just like sharding was. But layering is trying to solve it right at the beginning, so sharding (or server xfer) isn’t needed later.

Thanks, was watching some youtube video montages of the classic beta and noticed the layering tech and it looks like it can be abused to escape death among other things.

Yes there were many abuses with it. And many have already been patched (purpose of a beta). But I have no doubt there will be more problems. Hopefully not as egregious as some. But watching older videos from beta wont’t give a full picture, since much has already changed.

everyone knows layering is stupid. even the people who say its a good idea. blizzard dont give a f, and they wont until after the damage is done, and even then they wont admit they made a mistake. ill be playing day 1 because i have to.

yep, people are gonna exploit it too, theyll use to
escape wpvp
hunt rares etc multiple times
hunt resource nodes multiple times
All of this exactly like what happened when they released layering in retail, we know the consequences, it belongs in retail, not a classic remake

I wont say I love the idea of the layers… I will say I welcome it to que times or fighting several hundred people over a spawn point… Luckily layers will go away quickly for those that hate them. Those evening que times werent fun if you were the one stuck out of the game while your friends played.

i know for a lot of people its either 100% classic or it isn’t classic
this is one of the main things they bring up, unarmored mounts being another
their reasoning is if theres changes where does it stop then?

Oh, look, everyone. Someone posted the MONTHS old video which has already had most of the things in it patched.

There a compiled list of patch notes you can show me or direct me to?

Hit the blue post and search function.

We have been going over this for ages.

Thanks

I haven’t read any post of changes, blue post are of beta closing and now opening again this month for a period of time. Seems like they haven’t changed anything.

Why do you sound so bitter towards this subject anyways, are you a supporter of layering/sharding? I’m not.

People are bitter because this topic has been beaten into a fine red mist and you’re not bringing anything new to the discussion. Everything here has been posted here dozens of times in the last months.

That’s why you’re being told repeatedly to use the search function =P

The video linked is very old from early in the beta, and changes happened throughout the beta to address some of the problems. Layering isn’t and never will be 100% abuse proof, but the biggest problems have been fixed.

People are complaining about layering with that video like they’re completely unaware of what a beta test is. They also take Blizzard using the starter zones as an example of where sharding would help as some kind of promise that “it would only be in the starting zone”.

I’m not a supporter of layering so much as I begrudgingly understand why they think it’s important to have. Dead and dying realms were a very real thing even as the game was experiencing rampant growth, and being on one is worse than layering at launch

Layering aims to mitigate that problem, especially considering it’s expected there will be a spike of players at launch followed by a drop off as the tourists leave and people’s playtimes settle into normal hours.

The video is honestly a bit misleading though. If you read the stress test beta feedback, a lot of people had zero issues regarding layering on their servers until they forced them onto one to stress layering. Of course the video with well known streamers are going to experience more layering because they bring in massive amounts of people at unusual times, espescially on the one beta pvp server.

For everyone else, it’ll be a non-issue unless you want to play with a well-known figure. I highly doubt layering will last more than a few weeks and by then most people won’t reach 60 in this time.

Discussing it is different than receiving an official statement of patch notes solving the problems with layering like those shown in the video. Till then players will continue to make subjects on the matter.

The Eurogamer interview also brought up that the layering caps were lower on the beta than they will on live because Blizzard actually wanted to test the systems. So live will have fewer layers with higher populations.
