Was it ever explained how we were able to activate and use these things?
I don’t think so, sadly a lot of lore regarding the First Ones and SL was never fully explained.
Maybe I could have miss it, but I been farming Venari Rep… and as of now I think it was never talk about again after we activated.
But don’t worry there are people here exclusively in the Story Forums who would know more, that’s why its my favorite spot to read.
That and Class forums… keeping an eye on the Classes and their visual updates and how they players react to it! I like to know that WoW is keeping up at least in that regard…even if its an 20 year old game.
Love to rub it in to some of my friends who play more modern games for their visuals mainly and are savagely critical on WoW because of it. 
There’s a relatively common fan theory that it has something to do with having worn the Heart of Azeroth for so long during BfA, but that’s never confirmed. It’s basically just the result of people trying to logic out what makes our characters distinct from the others who can’t use the stones.
