First Flying Mount

Lvl 58 and about to purchase my first flying mount. I’ve got about 400 gold saved up and want to treat myself with the flying mount. Can anyone recommend a really good flying mount? I’ve seen the generic gryphons at Stormwind but want something… a bit flasher :stuck_out_tongue:

Not sure of cost just to fly. Was over 500gold few weeks ago at 60.
As for the mount you have very few options .
After you enter the portal to outland. The second quest will have you ride to the spot you can buy some more other than SW.

You can also buy for gold on AH from players that have put them on, or cash shop sells them for real money.

The faction mounts sold in Outland are the same ones sold in Stormwind (Orgrimmar for Horde). Price for mounts and training is determined by Stormwind/Org rep.

You’re limited to gryphons at first, but at level 70 you can learn Artisan level of Riding, which is 4-5k depending on your SW/Org rep, and is just a gold sink for a speed increase so the price isn’t likely to change. All of the “cooler” mounts like drakes become available after 70 though, and once you’ve learned a mount it’ll be available to your other characters as early as level 20, although they still can’t fly until it’s time to head to Outland/Northrend. Farming mounts at higher levels is a common endgame pursuit.

In general the “flashier” mounts tend to come from achievements or boss drops rather than vendors. As Jakjak noted, those are pretty much only available after level 70 (when you are able to access second expansion raids, and certain Heroic dungeons).

As Alliance, you’re pretty much limited to gryphons as your first flying mounts, just as the Horde are basically limited to Windriders as their first flying mounts.

Alternatively, you could spend real-world money in the Blizzard shop to purchase one of the mounts found there. Most of the store mounts have flight capabilities, but they do still cost dollars instead of gold, and tend to run in the $25 range, so it’s your call whether the cosmetic is worth it to you.

In game faction flying mounts are sold by either SW or Org vendors. You get a 5% discount for each level of rep you have with those two cities off of the base cost of the mount. - e.g. 5% at friendly up to 20% at exalted. Faster and Fastest flying each have a base cost of 5,000 gold so if you are exalted with one of those cities, you save 1,000 gold for each higher level of flying.

Other flying mounts tend to be either farmed, or purchased by reaching certain reputation levels with some faction. - e.g. In Outlands, if you are Exalted with the Cenarion Expedition, you can purchase their War Hippogrif. Or, you might run Magisters Terrace for a chance to get Ashes - the yellow bird that trails pink ribbons behind it.

Most people farm mounts on higher level toons as the drop rate is typically low in dungeons or raids with a few exceptions such as the instance under Wyrmwrest Temple In Dragonblight, Northrend which has a guaranteed frop for a dragon on Normal and a guaranteed drop for a different dragon on Heroic.

warcraftmounts.com covers all the mounts in the game.
wowhead.com has mount farming guides for each expansion and youtube has mount farming videos.

Depending upon your class, you need to be 6-10 levels above a normal dungeon to farm mounts and 10/11 levels above a normal raid. Add a couple of levels for heroic versions.

Thanks, guys. Kind of a shame, was hoping to get a really good mount and I thought I was very rich with the amount of gold I have at the moment but clearly not! Haha. Helped put things into perspective. I’ll just have to wait until LvL 70+.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the cost of higher level of flying.
Basic flying is a necessity, faster flying is a luxury that you’ll be more than able to afford later on as you get into higher level expansions.

Artisan flying, available at level 70 is 280% speed and is a noticeable difference over basic flying.
The fastest level of flying, available at level 80, is 310%.
You really can’t notice the difference between 310% and 280% flying.

When you hit 70, just come back here and ask for people who might be willing to carry you through some of the 100% mount drops. There are 3 drakes (Bronze, Twilight, and Black) which can be obtained simply by meeting specific criteria in their respective dungeons or raids.

Other interesting mounts can be obtained through achievements, although most of those require at least two resets to get.

That’s great to hear. I’m pretty excited now working towards the faster flying mounts!

The speed of a ground or a flying mount is derived from the level of riding training you purchase, not from any particular mount.

You can’t fly until level 60 so maybe you can save up some more gold.

I know im late to the conversation but, easiest would be to use your 110 boost and head over to the raid under Wyrmrest temple in Northrend.

It’s a cool looking drake that is a 100% drop and very easy for a 110 character to get. It’s fast to do and wont spoil the game too much for you if you are trying to avoid that.

Cheers! I’m not too far away from 110 so I’ll remember that when I make it through!

There’s two versions of the Obsidian Sanctum raid in Wyrmrest temple. Normal and Heroic and they each drop a different dragon mount.

Chances for the mount are increased for each of the Blue dragons above and surrounding the main boss that are still alive when the main boss dies. If they are all alive, the mounts are a 100% drop.

You don’t need to be 110 for hard mode Sartherion. You can probably do the 10 man version by the mid 90s. For the 25 man, I’d probably want to be 101+ (the bonus damage for overleveling does a significant jump at 101) although it can certainly be done sooner depending on class and skill. You can only do it once per week regardless of the raid size setting, so it takes two weeks to get both mounts.

The “fastest” way to clear it is to run right for Sartherion and kill him ASAP. All of the trash will run down to greet you. This saves you the annoyance of clearing trash while avoiding the minibosses. (They need to be alive for the mount to drop.) However, if that turns out to be too deadly, you can clear all the trash (except the dragons) ahead of time. If you accidentally pull a dragon, run to the entrance to reset them. (Or die, that works too.)

You have to be able to kill him before one of the dragons joins the fight (I can’t remember which one, but it’s on a timer) as once that happens he goes immune, and the fight can’t be soloed. It generally shouldn’t be a problem as it’s not much of a dps check, but if you run into it, it just means you probably want to pick up a level or two and try again.
