I remember doing a quest and seeing someone fishing and asking them why they where fishing, and how to do it myself. Also when I got the pole and skill I didn't know how to cast or click on the bobber to collect.
I soon learned that the fish and junk I was collecting had vendor value to it so I collected stacks and ran to the nearest vendor and repeated.
I also have a memory doing fishing with like 20 other guild members for a guild photo.
What is your memory?
I sat down to fish ready and instantly learned that you need skill, and a fishing rod. Ever since then nat pagle and I have been mortal enemies, he fishes 1 up, I fish 2, he thinks his hat is sexy, I steal it and claim it as my own.
"Wow, this is boring as @#$%" *grabs a beer*
My friend made me do fishing in Mulgore. I said, "Wow, cool, can I make a lot of money doing this?" He replied, "Nah man, they nerfed fishing like yesterday. Aint worth the time anymore."

Lol. Didn't mean to be sarcastic or mean about it. Wrote it in a joking way. :D My bad.
Finding the trainer, learning the skill, and spending a half hour trying to figure out how to fish.

My first memory is selling a stack of striped yellowtail that I caught at Feathermoon for 45 gold. I was shocked.

I kept talking to drunk guy at theramore but he wouldn't give me quest.
I used to love fishing in EQ2 and when wife and me switched to Wow I found out you had to pay to train, I was solidly opposed.
We were horde and saw a dwarf in coveralls and a fishing hat & pole in an area where he was very not safe.
He saw us and put his hands up and sat down, he surrendered to us. I /nodded to him and wife /waved, we started leaving and he /saluted me, that's when I decided It would be worth paying for.

Strangely, I don't remember my first fishing in WOW. I remember doing it, but not when I first learned how to do it in WOW specifically.
I think the problem is I did fishing in multiple console games. The one I remember best was Dark Cloud, but I'm pretty sure some of the Final Fantasy ones had it and Breath of Fire did, maybe one of the Suikoden too.

Torn cloth vendors for a whole silver? WoW! I can make some money here and finish buying those trainer abilities.
I remember being a tauren...and going to Mugole...or w/e it was called. I saw a fellow low level tauren there sitting there fishing on the bridge. I asked him how to do it and trained into it. After that I sat there and fished next to him and talked for a few hours.

Someone asked about other first memories of fishing.
This seems to be a legitimate first memory of fishing.
It's pretty darn close to mine.
I, too, was in Mulgore. My friends liked to fish.
They also liked to just sit, and sip Jack Daniels until they couldn't focus on the bobber any more.
I found quite quickly that fishing was not really interesting to me at all.
I remember in Wrath my friend had a bot doing fishing, and tried it myself.
It's was still boring.
By adding the daily in WoD, Blizzard made fishing interesting enough to where I would do the daily, you know, daily. So, I did in WoD. On one toon. And managed to max it out.
But I never went after the achievements, never went after the mount, or anything like that, and haven't really touched it since.
It's still boring.
I'd rather farm WQs and slaughter mobs. Just not for me.
In Dec 2004, I met my first WoW friend while fishing. She was on the little pier in the Pools of Arlithrien. We still play together.
I also remember trying to get to Booty Bay to buy the fishing book from the trainer so I could level past 150.
I never knew you could make good gold from fishing back then. I just did it during down time like waiting on boats, etc.

First time I fished was on that dock by the plant quest giver down the hill from Dolanaar and I still remember how shiny those old water animations where.

Your friend lied to you. ;)
I remember looking for these "pools" my guildies were talking about. Took me a couple weeks to spot them.
