Fire Mage with SKB

Hey all,

As it appears Fire will once again be the only or at least most viable mage spec for Mythic prog, I made the SKB Legendary (I haven’t played fire since first tier/Nathria) and I have to say: I hate it.

I get the premise of it but what I don’t get is:

  1. Do you ignore your SKB stacks when you’re in a real Combustion? For the opener it flowed well … go into an SKB Combust right after the opening Combust. After that it was pure crapfest.

  2. When in an SKB Combust, do you do the normal FB>PF>FB or is there some other rotation during this tiny window cause sometimes it completely left me with nothing to use for my real Combust when it was on CD.

Think those were the two main things I wanted to ask y’all before I do a deep dive into Mage Discord, Wowhead, etc.

Still praying we recruit a mage so I can give this crap up and I’ve officially given notice I’m done with mage end of this tier but while I’m the raid Mage (and only 1 of 2 people in my entire guild still playing this gods awful class) I want to try to be helpful, not a hinderance.

I am looking forward to the replies, what I can offer is to share that preheat had recently created a comprehensive guide to fire mage SKB. (2) SKB FIRE MAGE GUIDE | An update on the best rotation, legendaries, talents & more in Shadowlands 9.2 - YouTube

  1. To my understanding you use them to extended combustion.
  2. To my understanding any combination of FB, PF or even scorch to maintain your full normal rotation timings. In the video at the end.

Thanks for the reply.

I saw an updated google doc by Preheat in the Fire FAQ section of the Mage Discord that seems to have what I’m looking for too but I’ll definitely check out the link you provided when I get home.

Appreciated!

Definitely would recommend checking out Preheat’s YouTube guide on fire mage as it’s pretty helpful.

You never want to ignore your SKB stacks during combust. If you hit 8 stacks during your normal combust, you either want to instantly start hard casting your skb pyro or drop a rune and then SKB pyro depending on how much longer your instant rune from combust will last. Definitely feels awkward hard casting during combust buts it almost ways worth since if you sit on your 8 stack and keep combusting, youre wasting fireblasts and phoenix flames towards your next SKB. If you are running pyroclasm, you will hard cast pyroclasm pyros during combust even if you don’t have SKB proc’d as long as the pyroclasm pyro will hit during combust.

In SKB combust (or any combust really) the main thing to worry about is keeping infernal cascade stacks at 2. You’ll probably end up scorching during these combusts more than normal but as long as you have enough haste and the 4 set, fireblast CD should be low enough to keep IC at 2 stacks as long as you dont waste any charges.

Thanks for the tips!

Really just biding my time till the end of the tier then I’m re-rolling lock come hell or high water but in the meantime if I can do a little more dps to help prog I have to try.

My GM/RL has said if I want to switch now to go ahead but I’d feel bad costing the raid group their intellect buff. Not sure the damage I’d do as a lock would offset it (not looking to crunch those numbers).

Sad that it’s come to this, really. Just been unhappy with mage gameplay and performance this entire expansion.

… Already see I should be using Pyroclasm instead of Kindling. That might make the clunkiness of keeping stacks of FB and PF between Combustion and SKB-combustion a little less confusing.

Pyroclasm has fallen to kindling as of late. I’ve seen this on different websites as well as simming on raidbots

Seems most are running Pyroclasm tho … where did you see this?

I don’t remember. It was last week sometime. I do kno that when I run st fire, it tells me kindling.
Perhaps there’s a hard point to meet b4 u move to kindling or I’m not meeting it or something.
