It’s the tankiest dps spec Immunity, two cheat deaths, 20% dr from images, lots from passive absorbs from shields and strong defensive conduits. (on top of being insanely mobile) All of the damage is burst with zero sustained
Spec is overpowered in the worst way possible. it complete cancer to play and play with. It’s a pain to hold threat off it. It requires a lot of babysitting and micromanaging, it does zero dmg outside of CDs, and burst damage profiles are almost always, superior to sustained damage profiles.
It is getting nerfed in 9.1, but it’s always great to see another spec/class give perspective on mages because it lets mages know how they’re perceived.
I respect that you acknowledge it. The PVP forums seem to think BM Hunters are more busted than Mage at the moment, and I’m not sure where that stigma is coming from, since I want to give up whenever I fight a mage with Triune Ward.
It can be quite annoying if hunters Tranquilizing shot on cd against mages. Its particularly deadly if you do it right after they refresh their shields or right when they alter time. Getting your alter time instantly purged sucks as a mage and really cuts down their survivability.
I cannot figure out for the life of me how Tranq shot picks what to dispel. Also, Triune Ward gives 3 separate buffs, so you’re still left with 2 shields to drill through. That seems to be what most classes are upset about in regards to the legendary (except other mages, since they can spellsteal all 3)
But you have now freely gotten rid of a third of their shields and since you did it after they refreshed they can’t reshield for 25s. Plus its pretty trash that you can purge literally all of mages abilites, combust, alter time, shields, icy veins, arcane power, and then all their procs too. Its pretty dumb honestly.
Tranq shot is on a 10 second cd, so I think its a little less broken then you’re envisioning it. Since we can’t control what it dispels either, its a bit luck dependent for us. on a 10 second cd, the 3rd tranq shot would go out 5 seconds before you can use shields again as well.
Edit: Demon Hunter’s consume magic is also 10s, and according to wowhead, Purge (Shaman) and Dispel Magic (Priest) have no cooldown, so they can actually spam it if they want.
And funny enough, but shamans and priests are mages number 1 counter right now, oh and once klepto is gone from fire and frost, arcane will be destroying fire and frost because of dispels, mostly because fire and frost can’t afford to spam spell steal and need klepto.
Dispelling a mage is pretty much how you kill them, oh and how to live their burst. Which is kinda why Manther is saying Tranq shot is super useful while fighting a mage, regardless of the cooldown, getting those buffs off the mages is very important.
Another way to think of it is if you dispel a 7k shield, the spell that got rid of the shield just did 7k damage worth of pressure.
I suppose that’s a good point. I guess it would feel more substantial if i could control what it dispels (set up a priority queue or something), but then it would likely feel overpowered. I suppose I’ll need more mage fights to better see how it’ll impact them in practice.
This version of Boomy forgoes off-healing options with Resto affinity and gets rid of Vortex as well. So yes, while tanky, it is always at a trade off. A mage sacrifices nothing for its survival toolkit.
Mages aren’t exactly ‘tanky’ as the OP put it but their damage mitigation kit is the best for any DPS class in the game, hands down and nothing in m+ threatens them from a survival point.
