When it was announced they were renaming characters I didn’t really care. Then when I saw Finkle Einhorn being renamed I got really sad.
I have played the game off and on again over the years. Once when I had been away for a while I saw this character pop up. I remembered previous experiences with him and his items. It brought back so many fond memories and gave me excitement to play. If this renaming had happened before I had my experience it would have never happened. I would have never gotten that feeling.
I never knew this character was from a movie or anything. There is a negative with renaming characters. I hope the devs are done with this forever and never try to use names of real people or other references again!

Didn’t that happen over a month ago. And if I was Jim Carrey’s character I would have thrown up too.

And yet, the name held such a special place in my heart. With it gone I might as well be as empty chested as the Jailer with my soul stuck in a rock prison in deeper than the maw.
Please, kind people give me back the name I love with all my heart, without which my life is incomplete…Finkle Einhorn.

It doesn’t make you a bad person at all to have a fondness for something in a game you like, even if the basis of that character comes from something pretty damn horrid. But I do hope you can understand why it might have been hurtful for some people and thus why it was changed.

I’m confused as to what was wrong with the name that it had to be changed.

This is such old news. Shame on you for trying to stir the pot again, OP.

It was named after a character from the first Ace Ventura movie. An extremely transphobic character.

Quality bait thread.
Will a mod be smart enough to get ahead of it and just lock it?

I feel heckin mixed about this one.
I hated Jim Carey’s disgust for it at the time the movie was released but I don’t think calling the NPC what it was something I’d find offensive (rather the way I took it was the gnome had a secret identity).
Overall I understand why they changed the name - ultimately it has to do with a change in the times. Just as I’d expect them to change references that may in retrospect be considered culturally offensive.

It was a reference to the transgender villian from Ace Ventura
That led the the main character vomiting after he found out…
Which some could view as implying that transgender people are villainous and/or disgusting

He wasn’t transphobic he just wasn’t into making out with guys. It was also a comedy and not meant to be taken super seriously.

The character he was named after was trans. Not transphobic.
Hmm. I never saw it that way. I thought they just added a trans character.
But… I guess they went the “better safe than sorry” route.

Yeah you’re right, I worded that badly. But the way the character was used in the movie ultimately was for a transphobic joke.

I think this is actually what they are implying by the freak-out and long shower. Mind you in this instance she was a girl at the time they kissed and later became a man.
But at the same time even Jim Carrey says it was intended to be homophobic in the sense that it was poking fun at ‘Ace Ventura’ himself. It’s something they’re aware of and it’s intended to be a character flaw of him.
“It would probably be much different today,” Carrey said. “That was an honest completely homophobic reaction from that character. It was basically making fun of homophobia. It’s ridiculous. I’ve got a plunger on my face because I kissed a dude. It’s ridiculous.”

He was vomiting because earlier in the movie Jim made out with the character who he presumed was a woman and then reacted that way when he found out the character was actually transgender and Jim’s character is a straight male.
Also it’s comedy? Not surprised Blizz made the change though, can’t risk having a single thing offend anyone in any capacity in game anymore.

Don’t you mean it was a man who became a woman, Ray Finkle became Lois Einhorn.

Honestly who cares. People get bent out of shape in this country over the dumbest things. The character was a criminal that was insane trying to hide his identity in a fictional comedy and got caught eventually.
It doesn’t matter at all, but if they want to remove it from their ‘sensitive’ game cause some people have no sense of humor then okay.

it’s true! for example, this thread was posted by somebody who’s upset about a minor npc name change in a video game. insanity!

Yeah and now we’re talking about trans rights over a fictional character that never existed in a comedy whose star was known to go over the top and use crazy slapstick in everything he did. Regardless of what he said I’m sure the entire movie wasn’t supposed to intentionally upset anyone but these days that seems nearly impossible.
