Finding FFXIV fun doesnt mean WoW is dying

An old game is still “fresh” to a new player.

The fact that i have to point that out…

Not worded that way, but I can agree to…

Regardless, people are fed up and looking for other options.

I know you shouldn’t have to, but get reshade or gshade. They make the game look so much better. I use reshade and it has a preset to make it look like it’s not washed out.

I’m sure it helps, I’ve read.

However, I’m gonna pass on the gameplay. I did not have fun the 20-30 hours I put into it. Felt like a WoW clone with worse movement and slower GCD. I’m sure it all gets better. I just don’t have the patience.

How about let people make comparisons of games in the same genre so they can pray that one game that’s stagnated actually improves?

Thats not what people are doing, though. People are just bandwagoning because thats what youtubers are doing. And youtubers are doing what gets them clicks, which is outrage.

Go down the list on a 1 to 1 comparison.

Which game has better raids? WoW, hands down.
Which game has better dungeons? WoW, hands down.
Which game has better PvP? WoW, hands down.
Which game has a better Transmog/collectables? This is really the only debatable one, and its null.
Better leveling? again debatable, but im firmly in the WoW camp.

Honestly, outside of overall story, i cant think off a single point that FF does better than WoW if you are being honest and not judging on a curve,

Yeah it’s perfectly reasonable to like both FF14 and WoW at the same time. I know I do, though Blizzard has undeniably fallen on hard times. I couldn’t honestly say one is better than the other, there’s some aspects FF14 does better like story and boss fight designs, and some aspects WoW does better, like transmog and unlocking features faster.

But most of all, the two games are clearly for different people. I honestly can’t imagine anyone who loves pushing M+ as much as they possibly can, or would rather just get to endgame ASAP and not bother with anything else, I can’t imagine those people ever being able to get into FF14. So much stuff is locked behind the main story questline, which is stuffed full of dialogue and cutscenes. A lot of stuff is also locked behind sidequests, too, some of which are fairly in depth. Advanced classes like going from Conjurer to White Mage, and several class abilities, are also locked behind class quests every X number of levels. There is soooo much stuff you have to unlock through quests that if endgame is all you care about, especially being competitive endgame, you likely won’t enjoy the game, because even though FF14 has great raids, the journey is what it’s about, not the conclusion.

That said, if you love a good story, FF14 got you covered. They put so much time and care into their stories, character development (including your own, you’re a major part of the story yourself, not just a murderhobo looking for the next loot pinata!) and world building. While you’re doing something in one expansion, the rest of the world isn’t frozen in time, they’re advancing their own story, and many NPCs dialogue updates as you progress through an entirely unrelated story on the other side of the world. Not like, say, poor Khadgar who has been trapped studying books in Karazhan ever since Legion…

The Maelstrom is the Grand Company for you, then! Limsa Lominsa is an entire city of pirates! Til’ seas swallows all!

True but it is so fun playing the linear story-line in shadowlands over and over again on alt though the measly four zones! Than you pick your party to do chores for the whatever system blizzard made that they will scrape just like they did with all the systems since legion…

Honestly, this is my biggest issue with all the FF posts. They are comparing a single expansion to a base game + expansions. Its so disingenuous.

I’m not really sure that helps. They have dropped 4 content patches within the timeframe since Shadowlands dropped in November lol.

Im not up to date on my FF knowledge, but what were included in those content patches. Are they equivalent to WoW patches, or mostly just fluff?

I mean if you consider quest lines, raids, dungeons, etc. as “fluff,” then sure.

It’s fine, you don’t have to post on various alts lol.

This is my view as well – well stated.

14 is a story-based game for people who enjoy in-depth story and quest development. long cutscenes (not skippable by spacebar), slower paced advancement, and leveling-as-journey, as well as the complexity being, in relative terms, more focused on the character’s mechanics and rotation and less on encounter design and mechanics.

WoW is a game for people who like competitive instanced group endgame content, a difficulty curve based mostly around encounter design and mechanics rather than class rotations, faster-paced leveling, level-cap-centric game design and experience, and the ability to essentially skip the entire story by ignoring quest text and spacebarring away from cutscenes.

They appeal to different kinds of players, and I think at this point that this is by design from the developers of each game, to be honest. The fights among WoW players about FFXIV are mostly about the different kinds of WoW players they, themselves, are, much more than they are about anything in either game.

Oh … and PvP. If you like to PvP, 14 is not for you, at least not if you need to have your MMO be PvP-centered.

Apparently Endwalker is looking to fix PvP so we’ll have to see about that, for now though absolutely right

I agree with you overall, but that’s a pretty bold statement. I started FFXIV not long after ARR came out and have been playing it on and off since then. It started off as my “side” mmo and WoW is where I spent most my time. However over the years (starting in legion) FFXIV shifted to my main MMO and I started playing WoW less and less. Now I really only play it if I have a real itch for the random BGs. (PvP in FFXIV is an absolute joke)

I have no doubt that many people who try it won’t like it enough to stay (some may not like it at all). However, to claim that almost everyone will drop it? Seem a bit too extreme in the other direction. There will likely be many who try it and find it fulfills a niche or desire that WoW doesn’t for them anymore. Some will probably play both or swap between the two. Others may completely drop one or the other.

People, especially here in GD, love to prophesy of WoW’s end. However, like you said, the a new game being fun doesn’t mean another one will all of a sudden become a ghost town. People tend to gravitate towards extremes. Forums are especially guilty of this cause some one is passionate enough to bother going to a forum and writing about it they’re likely to have very strong feeling either for or against. In many cases if people are fairly neutral or indifferent they’re not likely to take the time to write about it.

WoW’s “death” is likely to be the same as most games (and products in general). With age it will become more and more obsolete. No one new thing will kill it but the steady stream of news things coming out will whittle at it’s popularity over time. Eventually WoW won’t be profitable and they’ll end it and move on. That could be 2 xpacs down the road or 20. Not anything unique to wow.

Personally I love seeing so many people get excited about FFXIV cause i’ve personally had great experiences so I want and hope others have similar ones. However, I don’t deny that there are weakness and imperfections. I don’t know if there’s any game that can truly be considered perfect. When I recommend I do my best to be as honest about both the pros and cons as possible so people know what to expect. Then it’s up to them to decide if it’s fun or not.

Same with WoW. While I don’t usually recommend it to people anymore (which i used to do a ton back in the day), if some one is interested or asks about it, I attempt to let them know about everything I feel they may not enjoy as well as everything they could look forward to.
