Are we really dependent on PvE gear (armor pen)? I would like to play Feral for the first season of wotlk, but idk if they’re viable until later seasons because of the reliance on raid gear.
Anyone know?

ArP is easy to amass, you can hardcap by s3 without grim toll. Otherwise you’re 50/50ing it (Gem til GT proc caps you).
Druids have pretty top notch defenses in Wrath as well so the loss of some resil won’t hurt as much as it does say, Arms warriors.
But you MUST get Grim Toll during S1 of Wrath. That trinket frees up a ton of itemization for other stats(hit, mastery) and it’s PvE BIS for awhile.
I am going to advise you that this is a terrible place to ask those questions. Find a knowledgeable player in a class discord.

Or just google it to read older discussions.
Ferals are actually more viable in earlier seasons than later seasons. With the lack of PvP gear, we’re extremely bursty and can 2-3 global squishy targets. As the seasons go on and healers start stacking resilience, we become less viable because we lack an MS effect. We’re still viable in later seasons, but become more of a support class than a damage class when in the right comp.
From what I remember, ferals only stack armor pen for PvE, and stack agil/crit for PvP. More crits = more combo points which = more CC/instant casts and 5 point bites/maims.
You’re gonna need a time machine to take yourself back to the original TBC pre-patch, when Bear Mangle didn’t have a 6-second cooldown.
Kitty-Step is fun, tho.
At lower rating it really won’t matter. It would make your life a lot easier having pve gear. At high ratings I’d say it’s almost mandatory as everyone who takes PvP seriously has pve gear because it makes you more competitive. It just depends on your goals. If you just want to PvP and have fun and possibly get to 2k or 2200, full PvP gear is just fine.
Feral will always be a strong 2s class in WotLK. That said it does ok in 3s and generally very weak in 5s.
Due to bleeds, ferals aren’t dependant on ArP to do good dmg, ArP just really buffs their burst.
Priests and Hunters are your best friends, as you are often dependant on CC chains to score kills. Disc/Feral will have decent representation at the top of the ladder in 2s, while Jungle cleave (Hunter/Feral/disc) will see limited play near the top of the ladder in 3s.
Feral is not an easy spec to play in pvp, its not particularly strong in 1v1 or in bigger bg fights, and you have to how to deal dmg effectively in pvp with a somewhat pve like rotation.
But they can really shine in 2s/3s up to r1 status because their comps are really difficult to deal with for most people. Theyre somewhat rare on the ladder so people lack experience vs them, theyre really hard to cc cause of forms (cant poly or slow/root), and they can instant clone which is very difficult to avoid unless you put your entire attention on his procs.
However their comps are not easy to play. You really need to play around being hyper aggresive with dps and clones to land kills because your ccs are short duration and you have no MS.
Sounds crazy! Thanks for explaining all that.
Feral PvP is fine is WotLK
