Feral Vs Boomkin

1 Druid with 2 DPS specs. 1range - 1melee - Range DPS is always favoured over melee DPS

Boomkin is ranged with more damage and more utility so honest question…

What is the point of feral? In all honesty, what is the point of feral in its current state. Less damage, less range, less utility… wheres the logic, why cant the love be split.

Some people, myself included, prefer melee toons. And I like Druids. Makes it a no brainer

If you go strictly by the sims, boomkin is the top dps spec in the game right now. Feral is near the bottom.

Boomkin 415 ST Sim - 29882 DPS
Feral 415 ST Sim - 26115 DPS

Difference - 12.6% - 3767 DPS

What is not described here is the inherent disparity in the skill ceiling on the two specs. Boomkin is a fairly easy spec to navigate, and the skill ceiling isn’t super high as far as raw dps goes. Utility definitely adds some skill there, but that’s not what we’re measuring. Feral, on the other hand, has a significant skill level required to get respectable damage, and the skill ceiling for raw dps is quite a bit higher than Boomkin.

This disparity is the reason why the average feral player struggles and is a big part of why feral has such a negative stigma attached to it.

A skilled feral druid can perform well. And, honestly, I would imagine that the majority of active feral druids are playing well right now, because only the strong survive in this type of environment.

In m+, the melee slot is full. Feral cannot bring the same things that rogue, dh, monk, or dk can bring. Balance does not suffer the same problems, because the ranged camp is more flexible. This is to mean that the strongest specs are all melee right now, and there is a very fixed comp at the top end of prot war, resto druid, double rogue, ww monk.

How to fix? Without a complete rework, it obviously needs a damage buff. It also needs a unique buff in order to be considered for top end content…the old Leader of the Pack comes to mind (5% crit + a heal on crit). That would be an instant invite in top end raids and would be much better consideration for m+.

With a complete rework, feral would likely lose a lot of its inherent difficult, to the chagrin of the chosen few who have remained loyal.

Be honest. Are you Hagski in disguise?

So basically Athonel said what I was gonna say…but better…

Where did you get your sims btw? I’m looking at Noxxic “real” dps and its showing boomkin 26.7k and Feral 25.3k.

Edit: nvm, just checked warcraft logs and on most fights for BfDA the top Balance Druids are beating the top Feral Druids by about 3k dps. : (

Athonel said it extremely well. Well put. The only people who play feral, are people who love druids, and are dedicated to feral regardless of the cost. That’s the only reason to play feral.

LOTP would be a nice bandaid fix in a raid environment and would help for mythic+. I don’t understand why they don’t just give back cyclone to druids for pve, or at least to feral/guardian. That would be nice utility and easy to do.

A good feral will probably out dps a boomkin in a dungeon atm. Feral isnt really that awful I dont think, theyd fit well into a mistweaver/prot war group. But feral has really bad stigma, is clunky and annoying to play and no one feels like trying it out because of blizzards hamfisted molestation of the class.

I’ve just come back after a few month break, and honestly, I’m ECSTATIC that Feral is only 3k behind Balance. When I left, we were roughly 14k behind.

It’s the life you live as a true Druid lover. Sometimes, the spec you want to play isn’t the spec that’s best. But at least you don’t have to level 12x 120’s to play all content.

I main resto, but will be switching to bear for tanking in 8.2. I have always played feral as my dps because i love the engagement of it. I have found I get bored of boomkin when i do need to play range. My guild is a Heroic focused guild with some mythic occasionally and I am usually at the top of the dps meters when I play feral.

Feral gets to be a cat. So far that’s the only positive I can think of.

I’ve only played feral on this toon and offpsec’d bear in legion for a bit. i LOVE feral and have never ever tried the fire chicken. Maybe i’ll build a second set for boomy and give it a shot. But I’m feral tried and true :smiley_cat:

Unless you pride yourself on being a true and loyal Druid of the Claw there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to play a feral over Boomkin. The developers have given every indication short of tell us to shut up that they only care about boomkin and restoration. But we are stubborn and won’t take the hint.

Fire chicken? Theres no fire involved.

ive played both specs equally in pve and pvp and boomkin is far superior in every single way.

Feral though is more fun to play, but thats it… Its just more fun.

There is no advantage for you to have/bring a feral in pvp or pve. A boomkin simply brings more… more everything.

Mad props to all you ferals that are sticking with it. My two main toons for most of my life in WoW were my Sub rogue and Feral druid. Both of them just make me sad to play now.

The thing is though, Its not really that tough to find a Raid spot as Feral. Anything really can get into raids really because every spec in the game meets the dps requirements and it mostly comes down to skill. Thats really not the problem. The problem is specifically mythic+ where even considering that feral can output more dmg then boomkin, boomkins make the keys more easier to run with their utility and fill the range slot.

Feral are not competing against Balance Druids but in fact competing against other all of which bring better things then Feral.

M+ is all about what can your spec do to shorten time and prevent wipes. In a lot of cases dps isnt whats shorting the most time but skips and wipe prevention.

Boomkin is SUPER faceroll, feral requires SKILL to be considered “good”. It feels much more rewarding, even if we aren’t close to the top.

This, in combination of being a melee (which I prefer) is why I’m feral over balance.

noone here is asking for feral to be easier… just not sure why its harder, does less, is melee and has less utility… lool like wtf

this exp stinks!

blizz hates feral which is fine, i just theyd remove it at this point.

Feral is perfectly fine once you figure it out and get the right traits. Blows boomy away unlike the group think memes posting in the forums.
