If you go strictly by the sims, boomkin is the top dps spec in the game right now. Feral is near the bottom.
Boomkin 415 ST Sim - 29882 DPS
Feral 415 ST Sim - 26115 DPS
Difference - 12.6% - 3767 DPS
What is not described here is the inherent disparity in the skill ceiling on the two specs. Boomkin is a fairly easy spec to navigate, and the skill ceiling isn’t super high as far as raw dps goes. Utility definitely adds some skill there, but that’s not what we’re measuring. Feral, on the other hand, has a significant skill level required to get respectable damage, and the skill ceiling for raw dps is quite a bit higher than Boomkin.
This disparity is the reason why the average feral player struggles and is a big part of why feral has such a negative stigma attached to it.
A skilled feral druid can perform well. And, honestly, I would imagine that the majority of active feral druids are playing well right now, because only the strong survive in this type of environment.
In m+, the melee slot is full. Feral cannot bring the same things that rogue, dh, monk, or dk can bring. Balance does not suffer the same problems, because the ranged camp is more flexible. This is to mean that the strongest specs are all melee right now, and there is a very fixed comp at the top end of prot war, resto druid, double rogue, ww monk.
How to fix? Without a complete rework, it obviously needs a damage buff. It also needs a unique buff in order to be considered for top end content…the old Leader of the Pack comes to mind (5% crit + a heal on crit). That would be an instant invite in top end raids and would be much better consideration for m+.
With a complete rework, feral would likely lose a lot of its inherent difficult, to the chagrin of the chosen few who have remained loyal.
