Fences need a gate

While doing my fence I noticed there is no easy way to get out of the plot backyard if your fence is too high. It would be great if fences had a gate.

Now since there are a lot of different fence models, it would be a lot of work for them to design a gate for each model. A couple generic ones could be made and I guess the fence could be reworked around it.

Would like the option of a gate instead of leaving gaps to run out of plot.

Edit: they could even make a generic fence gate and have an advanced mode like they do for the walls and roof to change the style to more closely match your fence.

A gate is a good idea. I don’t think that they’ve assigned the art team to housing as much as they are pulling assets. So, we’d have to think of where we’ve seen an animated working gate. I can think of a ton of moving doors that spin and lock and have gearing in the place set, I can’t think of any that swing open and, I guess, take up floor space.

A door works inside, surely they could design a door that looks like it belongs to a fence and use that outside?

A retracting gate would be an awesome idea. I’ve stacked up barrels so I can ā€˜jump’ over my fence as a temp solution.

Anyway just a thought to some of the smaller details that I hope are implemented later down the line.

Well, golly. I think that this is much more fun than a gate!

Stacking barrels remind me of an old trick in Ultima 7 game. Stack multiple crates to get to the top of the house and enter the chimney for some easy secret loots.

They sure could. If the art team was assigned to the housing stuff. I don’t think (I don’t really know) that the art team is working on housing at all. There is a housing design team who are pulling from assets already in the game – thousands upon thousands in a huge catalog. So far, I don’t think that I’ve seen any piece that is ā€œnewā€ to us.

I was just leaving open spaces in my wall where a gate would go, but would much prefer a gate or three. I’m sure they will do it…someday.

One exists already, the iron horde gate (can’t remember the name) from Twin Peaks. It splits into two and retracts off to the sides.

The Dalaran sewer grate is significantly easier to obtain, and despite the name would look fantastic with a number of fences as a gate.

I did look up those two gates in the housing directory. If I could win Twin Peaks enough, would love to have it.

The Dalaran sewer gate is retractable or swings out? I can craft it, if it would work as a functional gate. (Edit: a comment on wowhead says it’s only usable indoors.)

Tbh I think gates should be baked into the system and easy to obtain for anyone, kind of like the front door, just a basic item on the housing vendors.

Then if folks wanted to get fancy they could do some challenges that award better gates, like achieve awards or the Twin Peaks gate.

They could look at some of the gates in raids that lock you into a boss area during the fight. Some of those could be worked into housing gates. I know there are gates in the game in other areas though I can’t think of any specific ones off hand.

They could let us use some of the interior-only doors outside too.

I’ve made gateways with trellises but they don’t have a part that opens and closes. They do make a nice looking entry to the yard though.

There are several models in-game of gates that I think would be nice have as decor items. Some of the elegant ones like are in the graveyard areas I would especially like.
The fun part is that this topic brings a whole new, and better if I may add, meaning to the term ā€œgating contentā€.

It swings out, and splits down the middle.

The guy on the Housing interview circuit with a bunch of streamers and who gave the WoW official video on Housing 101 is Jay Hwang. His title is Principal Artist.

The art team is definitely working on Housing.

I took one piece of fence and put it at a 30 degree angle to simulate a partially open gate.
