I submitted this several times to seemingly no avail. So, I’m posting here to the community. Sometimes when using Feign Death, it just totally fails. Basically, there’s a one a three chance for one of the following to occur: I successfully Feign Death and drop combat, Feign Death does the animation, but keep me in combat, or Feign Death just goes on CD and my character does nothing while I remain in combat. Is anyone else having this issue? It’s not consistently happening against specific mobs/players, but rather a totally random annoying as hell issue. Obviously, in a clutch moment, this not working means you’re totally screwed. Hopefully, I’m not the only one having this issue lol. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts/experience with this ability.
UPDATE: Thanks everyone for all your responses on this issue! A couple things to save everyone time:
- This isn’t a damage, such as AOE, issue causing FD to fail.
- It’s not a mouse (clicking) or key-bind issue–I’ve tried various methods.
- Feign Death is sometimes failing, as in the animation or sound doesn’t even happen, but the ability goes on CD as if it had been used.
- This issue happens at random under various circumstances, such as BGs, Arenas, Raids, random mobs, etc. It’s not specific to any kind of mob or attack.
- This issue has happened while being completely still.
Hopefully that’s helpful! Thanks everyone!

Sometimes I think it has to do with input. Cause any movement input causes you to stand up. So when running if you feign death you can trigger the reset before it activates. At least that’s my theory. My experience improved when I made a conscious effort to stop moving before dropping.

If you have debuffs / dots on you it can keep you in combat. Be careful what you have on yourself. Mortal wounds is something that Feign Death even PvP talented will not remove and will keep you in combat. Bleeds will keep you in combat. You gotta give yourself a half second sometimes for it to kind of trigger, but what Feign should definitely do is drop any threat and any casting on your character. If those two things are happening but you’re still in combat, it most likely is a debuff.
Big thing you may be overlooking, your pet. If your pet remains in combat you will too. Make sure you “Play Dead” your pet to get out of combat as well.
Feign Death and Play Dead do not share a CD, so you can link the two together on a macro. I use this to do an almost vanish sometimes with camo. BE CAREFUL that pets in their “play dead” wont do anything until you tell them to “Wake Up.”
Feign Death is a pretty simple spell, made complex to get out of combat with many other factors that are easy to overlook.

I thought it was this too, so I made absolutely certain to stand completely still and then very steadily select the key-bind for Feign Death. Still fails about 1/3 of the time though.

That’s not detailed enough to make a proper bug report. So we’re all going to assume that you’re making a mistake. Especially since we don’t experience it randomly failing.
You can do some tests with combat dummies and try to specify in more detail under what situations it’s failing. Without more details we can just speculate, but I can guarantee that Feign Death definitely does not fail randomly when I use it.
Everything you said is true and I appreciate your response. It doesn’t address what’s specifically happening to my character, but all good points nonetheless. My character is actually failing to Feign Death altogether sometimes. The ability, while standing completely still with no DoTs and even having dismissed my pet for testing purposes, is just sometimes (about 1/3) going straight to CD with no animation or sound even. It just completely bugs out. Besides, even if my pet was in combat and I was loaded with DoTs, it should be working. lol.

Are you using a transmog toy or something that alters your character’s race? Some of those have models that can’t display the Feign Death animation.
Did you read the other several paragraphs? Honestly, just wondering, since you’re addressing only one sentence when there are paragraphs to read from that describing everything in great detail. Thanks for your response!
Yeah, it’s just that the details you wrote are only specifically on what happens after it fails, not the conditions under which it fails. A bug report needs you to reliably be able to reproduce the bug.
No toys or additional gimmicks out. This used to work great over the years that I’ve played a hunter. I’d say sometime during BfA it just started getting really buggy for me. A variety of non-specific situations cause this to fail. Sometimes PvP, other times PvE. It happens verse mobs, elites, bosses, etc. It happens with a pet, without a pet, with DoTs/without DoTs. It’s annoying as hell. I figured everyone would be stating, “yeah, that happens to me sometimes too.” But now, I’m starting to wonder if I have an equipment issue (mouse, latency, etc,).
I use a macro like:
#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/stopcasting
/cast Feign Death
I’m not on my main computer right now, but that’s similar if not exactly what I’ve used for years w/o any type of bug.
This will stop all other actions so it will focus on purely casting Feign Death. I’d say give this a try and let us know how it works out. I’m generally interested in if it continues for you.
Let us also know if you’re using any kind of macro for it currently. Maybe there’s a flaw in that.
If you have your right mouse button down (for camera control) when you hit Feign, any movement of your mouse, or releasing the right mouse button, will cause your character to stand back up. Since Feign takes a half-second or so to actually register as far as combat dropping and threat tables go, it’s very easy to break it before that happens and completely negate the effect.

Its still possible to take damage from some attacks while FD’ed and some of those will cancel you out of FD. I generally only see that with some boss mechanics when trying to avoid dying myself on a wipe. You can reduce the possibility of this happening by popping turtle and then FD.
Try to use a click instead and see if it works - especially if you’re using a modifier keybind (shift, alt, ctrl, etc).

Thanks for this response! I’ll implement and let you know. I think I actually used this at one time, so I’ll have to see if maybe it got switched out/off and that’s perhaps why Feigning started randomly becoming an issue. I’ll post back… Thanks again!
